wheel gap?

i want to put on 17x7 motegi mr4 rims with kumho ecsta 711 tires (225/45/17) on my '97 eclipse gs. right now, with the stock rims and tires, wheel gap is about 5 inches, quite large. what should i expect with the new rims?

hmm, what are some popular lowering kits for this car? incase i decide to lower her.

If you're going to use springs I would use a decent spring that doesn't drop it more then 1.5 inches. You probaly will have to upgrade your shocks at some point cause your stock ones won't be able to take the stress of a drop.

If you like crappy handling that is only surpassed by the crappy ride, sportslines are for you. I tried mine for a 3 weeks since they were free from a friend and gave them back to him. Pro-kits are offer a better handling and ride but only drop about 1 and a half. Doesn't sound like much but seems to look pretty good even w/ 18 inch rims. I haven't used other springs but defintly stay away from some 50 dollar ebay specials.
 
sorry to hijack the thread, but I've been in a similar situation. I have 17x7 Tantrums and I have had 1.5-2 inch lowering springs (i really don't remember which i got them thrown in with a deal) and have been afraid to install them because I do not wish to purchase new shocks. I wish to sell my car this season.

My question is would my car be able to run with stock shocks on a 1.5-2 inch drop? has anyone done it?

when getting new wheels they should not be any bigger nor smaller then stock. so your car SHOULD have just as much wheel gap. it may look like more cause by a smaller sidewall, but the overall diameter should be the same because: if the wheels are overall smaller or larger it will through milege and the speedo off, maybe not a lot, but in time it adds up. you want the closet exact same sized wheels. i have 17s with kumho 215/45's without my car lowered - it may apear lower due to the bodykit, but its stock height, here is a pic: (*** note: car is RED - see the brick house and my dads red f150, my digi SUCKS*** )

as for lowering without getting new shcoks/struts. ok some people have pulled off dropping their car 2'' and having their stockers not blow out the min you get it off the lift for months or even years. some have put on eibach prokits without new shocks and everyhting is dandy, however some people's car their shocks blow right away and the ride because awful. if your going to lower your car without getting shocks along with it, that is fine. DO plan for the worst and start saving your money up for new shocks. or just save up enough and get shocks and springs at the same time. personally anything over ~1.3 i recomend new shocks strongly, however with a spring like the eibach prokit, i dont think new shocks are NEEDED. i plan on just getiting prokits and seeing what happens, if i have to get new shocks i will.
