What should I set my redline to?

I just rebuilt my Mitsubishi 2.0L Turbo with a 2.3 stroker kit. Eagle rods Wiseco Pistons. I love the extra bottom end. :D

I have heard that because of the geometry of increasing the stroke you can't turn the kind of RPMs you would with the 2.0. Out of concern I set my MSD to redline at 6300.

What are your opinions on a safe redline? :confused:

Well I guess that would be safe. Useless but safe.
 
Depending on how well it's built, I'll bet you could rev it to 9000. You're just going to be going through bearings faster than you probably want because of the lousy(er) rod ratio of the 2.3. If it's a daily driver, 6500-6800 is probably safe.
 
Stock rev limit is fine. 7500 isn't going to hurt anything. When people refer to the 2.3l not being able to rev as high as the 2.0, they refer to the fact that the 2.0 can easily spin to 9k with just some valve springs, and not have to worry about piston velocity. especially with the considerably lighter weiscos. My rev limiter is 8000, but I shift at 7500, the extra 500 is just if I need it going into a turn or somethign where I don't have time to upshift.

If youlike your car and your not a pimp I would keep it to 7000. If you dyno your car you can set it to where your powerband STARTS to fall off, this works fairly well.good luck
 
I Had my 2.3 fully balanced including pp and flywheel. i turn 8500 no prob....
 
Well it sounds like I will be safe to set it to 7k. Until I do the Cams and head it won't pull hard past 7 anyway.

this may or may not be a stupid question, but.. where are you going into a turn at 7500/8000 RPM? :confused: -jam
 
I wouldn't spin a 2.3 motor past 7500 no matter how well built. I have tried this in the past with two long stroke motors and both failed rather quickly.

7000?

We turn 7500 with a 408 in a buddies C5 corvette. 4" stroke, 6" rod = same R/S ratio as a 2.3 stroker. This is a 408 with a centrifugal blower, so that puts a lot more load on the main bearings than turning a few extra RPM's ever will. I've built Honda D16Y8's with a similar 1.52:1 rod/stroke ratio that turn 8500, 9000 RPM's without issue. You're looking too much at the long stroke and fairly short rod as being a limiting factor in how high you can turn it, rather than the quality of assembly and parts used.

Pacific Raceways, Turn 3, Downshift to second, brake hard, accelerate. At 7500, Im still a few meters from my braking point of turn 4, so without the extra few revs, you either have to just hold you speed, or upshift, then downshift right away; neither way is fun, or fast. Id rather just keep in in second and spin it 200 RPM higher, then brake. No shifting neccicary, and it gets better lap times.
 
Don't lie Ryan, you're never going roadracing. You'll be too busy buying clutch discs for that :laugh:

People should be a little more specific when they post, do you mean it's fine as in nothing has failed, or it is fine as in there was no appreciable bearing wear when you tore down the motor and actually checked.
 
What has been done to your head? If it's a stock head, I say don't go past 8k. Built, I would say keep it under 8500.
