The mechanic I took my ride to said my stock turbo had to be replaced because it was sucking up oil and the whole white smoke out the muffler thing. My question is I have no mods besides an A’pex cat-back; I’m low on funds, so I needed what were the least mods I would need to get a turbo upgrade? Nothing expensive, probably a used one actually. Thanx need advice quick cuz the cars at the shop right now.

It doesn't sound like following the mod list is an option for him right now....

If you're seriously low on funds just get a T-28; it's a bolt on replacement for a stock T-25 and it'll be a little faster. I _think_ the stock fuel stystem will support it at stock boost levels, but you should double check with somebody to make sure....

just look for a cheap turbo and keep the boost low since you have no fuel support. 16gs are pretty cheap as well as 14b's. if all else fails just get a t25 for cheap off ebay.

look for someone on here with a t25 for sale, and just get another one back on

doing a turbo upgrade is a huge pita if you arent really trying to spend money...I'm on the verge of going up to a 16g, and let me tell you, theres alot of parts you are going to need

if you want to UPGRADE, and you don't get something that bolts onto the stock 2g manifold you are going to need an install kit.

basically, to do the turbo upgrade CORRECTLY you are going to need a turbo, injectors, fuel pump, possibly a fuel pump regulator, a boost controller, and if you want the turbo to last you will definately need a turbo timer.

if you arent really trying to spend alot of money try to find a t25 replacement or a t28 and make sure you get a boost controller to keep the bost levels stock so you don't break anything...

thank you sounds like i'll try and find a T28 or a 14b. which ones better? can this all be done for $300-600?

A T28 is better than a 14b. And the 14b isn't a direct drop in, you would then need to change you lower intercooler pipe. Both ways can be done in your price range.

a t28 is without a doubt better than a 14b, but it will cost you more, no question.

the t28 is a direct bolt on turbo, and the 14b you will need an install kit...

for $600 though, you may be able to do a 14b/16g upgrade correctly...you will have to shop around though...the t28 costs $600 brand new if you send your old core to Forced performance - that can be seen here - http://linux.forcedperformance.net/...oduct_Code=TUDSMBig28&Category_Code=DSM-Turbo

well from what i know, the best part about the t28 and big t28 and killer t28 is that they perform exceptionally well, and can hold just about as much pressure if not more than a 16g and they bolt up to the stock setup...

How confident are you in your mechanic? Have you done all the basic misc. tune up and maintenance? you know, there are a FEW things that can cause oil to get into your engine and blow smoke. perhaps a new PCV, or a catch can on your breather. It sounds like the last consideration you should be making is upgrading your turbo. I've spent over 10K on my car so far, all on engine and suspension, and still have a t25. (only for another 3 months though) better to do things right, to include maintenance, and security than to just slap on a bigger turbo b/c you're smoking. Just a thought.

i totally agree with the above post.

on my 92 im totally stock still. but i've had to do all new breaks all around, new flywheel (old was cracked), water pump. crap like that.

the only things im going to look at upgrading are thing i know will be a PITA after all the maintinance is done. i.e., engine enternals, valve train. i havn't even gotten an exhaust yet.

but in terms of turbo, if you can pick up a cheap t-28 go for it. but if not just ebay, or dsmtrader a t-25.

i was quite suprised to learn on mine i already have a 14b upgrade, except the asshold who had the car before me pulled the manual ecu upgrade and put in the stock a/t ecu. so it f***ed injectors. oh well, you get what you get with these cars.

anyway, good luck with the turbo. i say just go t-25 unless t-28 is cheap. and make sure he's not pulling your chain, it could be anything. i.e. valve stem seals, pcv valve, rings, turbo, breather. check everything out before you blindly start fixing thing you are "told" aren't working anymore. :talon:

they are both absolutely right. i dont want to contradict myself and say check everything else first yada yada but there are different ways of making power without strapping on a bigger turbo first...I have had my motor checked for compression and all of that, and there is a specialty dsm shop nearby me, that I had check my car first for EVERYTHING before i started doing anything.

i cant say ive spent 10k on mods, because i havent, but I did just get a full race trans done with LSD so it is true that just slapping a big turbo on isnt always the best route.

i just assumed before hand that you fully trust your mechanic and he knows for 100 percent sure that it was the turbo that caused the problem.

in the end though, if it is the turbo, i say try and get a t25, and just keep that on there until you get enough money to do a turbo upgrade correctly. and remember, with more power, you are going to need more parts to get the power to the ground if you do decide to get a turbo upgrade. Im still on the blowdryer and even on full race trans i spun through second the other day...

all in all though, i say try and buy a t25 that you can bolt ight up, and then get a blown t25 and get the $ to send that in to a t28...good luck
