What is manual trans gear bolted to case?

The 1996 GSX (5spd manual, AWD Turbo).

We have the end of tranmission case removed to re-torque the nuts
holding gears on shafts. ( recommended for 5th gear moving shifter).

The dealer parts breakdown and other diagrams we have seen show
synchro held onto shaft with end nut and the disc spring.

But our case has three allen head fasteners holding what appears to be
a brass synchro ring in a fixed position , bolted right on to the upper
case, lined up with upper shaft.

For those of you that have rebuilt a manual trans or been inside yours.
Are you familiar with this and how come it does not show on the diagrams
this way ?

Mostly curious, but concerned I am not looking at correct diagrams.

The way I see it. When you pull the end case the synchro on the very end that is loose(not bolted onto anything). Is a dummy synchro, its there to hold the sychro keys in place, for the actual 5th gear synchro on the opposite side of the hub slider. Witch actually IS behind the 36mm nut as in your diagram. The three bolt allens with the wave spring attached to the case rest on the dummy synchro and keeps preload on the dummy synchro to keep the keys in place inside the hub slider/sleeve
 
There is a brass synchro in the end of the hub/slider, then the cone is bolted to the end case, with the wavespring holding the synchro in place between the two. The name for everything is the reverse brake.
 
donniekak, you are so right. I studied this some more. Brass synchro looking
piece attached to case is Reverse Cone.

What got me confused was that I have no wave spring or Reverse synchro
in the hub/slider. I can;t understand how reverse worked at all missing two pieces. And with the nut stripped....

So I ordered the synchro, wave spring, inner spring, new nut.

Saturday we put it back together and will use Red Line MT-90.

Okay. I agree.

Boy do I feel stupid. There is a spring behind that synchro on the case.
Which made no sense to me.

But if the synchro is fused onto the cone then that makes sense.

So if I take out the fasteners and remove this I may be able to separate the cone.

Or possibly need to replace the cone too.

That stripped end nut must have allowed the synchro to get smashed onto the cone.

Okay. Pried Reverse synchro off cone.

Installed brand new 36mm nut and torqued to 110lbs.
Dimpled sides so it won't move.

Installed new wave spring and reverse synchro.

Sealed up case.

Torqued case bolts to 26lbs.

Installed fresh Red Line MT-90.

5th works fabulous. No movement of shifter.
Reverse is smooth and quiet.

It all feels real good.

Next week I wil install new sunroof cables and make one guide tube from stainless steel (instead of copper).
