I took my 92 tsi into the dealer ship due to an idle issue. Car seems to want to stall when I first start giving it gas and occasionally stalls when I go from park to reverse. No CEL.

Although I was billed $90+ for the diagnostic all they found out was my "stepping motor" didn’t seem to be working. They said it wasn’t throwing any codes. The boost leak test they said came 1 psi from spec

I have tried to search for the info on this site but have not found it yet

maybe they meant my TPS, and I have looked into seeing if that is something I can change or test at this point if I have a reasonable idea it could fix my issue ill buy a new one but I am leery about compounding what will seem like a minor issue if I end up causing the car to not run after I just got it running again.

A stepper motor is an electric motor that can accurately turn in specific amounts (steps). So you can tell it to take 3 steps clockwise or 5 steps counter clockwise to turn some mechanism a specified amount. In the case of the idle speed controller, the ECU is controlling your idle by making specific adjustments to the amount of air which can enter the motor at idle by telling the stepper motor to turn a certain amount in one direction or another.

It is very common for the ISC aka stepper motor to go bad. Its located on the lower part of the throttle body, its a brown square shaped connector with a black plug coming from the harness. Its pretty expensive to buy new but its better to get it new than replace it with a used one that is probably just as old as the one that went bad in your car.

If you'd rather not pay $235 from DSMotorsport, I have a used one that's in excellent looking and working condition, all the coils have been tested and are in perfect working order. PM me if you're interested in buying one.
