ok, i had a shot cylinder head on my 92 talon awd wich i replaced with one that seemed to be good. Before i installed the "good" one i sent it to get brushed, and used a new OEM head gasket. After putting the car back together i started it and it seemed to be good until i noticed the big oil leak through what it seemed to be the head gasket under the water thermostat housing. Can anyone help me out with this? Is my cylinder head bad?

yes it was resurfaced, and about the head i torque it down to 68 ft-lbs as i was told at autozone when i bought the head gasket, and fallowed steps on the chilton manual. one thing i did use the old head bolts would that make a difference on torque?

Yes reusing the old bolts wont work out right. What happens is the bolts strech when you toque them down. Well the bolt you put back in are already streched, and will not hold the head down tight.

indeed the bolts stretch... i would recommend getting arps for the little bit of extra money, they are worth it, and if you have to take the head off again, you dont have to buy another set, because you can re-use the arps

Are you sure it isn't leaking from the turbo oil feed at the head, or the cam position sensor o-ring? You need to be sure, before you rip the head off again. Also: while the ARP head studs are better, they are still subject to the same physical laws of stretchability that the stock bolts are governed by. My point is, if the stock head bolt hasn't snapped, I would have a hard time believeing that it's simply a bolt problem.

I agree that if you used the old bolts they are stretched, and at the least should be replaced with new OEM bolts, but as stated I'd buy the ARP's for the extra money they will stretch but will hold up better and can be used more then once before they stretch. I would definetly check other possibilities, like the cam sensor seal, and the turbo oil line first.:talon:

yes i checked the oil feed line and the cam sensor seal and they are not leaking, i will buy new bolts would i also need a new head gasket? with this new one on i only started it one time.

thanks guys i will do that and see what happens. all let you all know how it worked out.

i know that stock bolts have to be replaced, while the arps are re-useable. if the arps stretch wouldnt you have to replace them just as you would an oem bolt? im confused about this. they are an extreme amount harder and put up with a lot more abuse.

Any bolt will stretch when heat and pressure are applied. But if you never ran the car much, there is no need to buy a new set of ARP's. Put on thousands of miles and then i would maybe say yea. Also, ARP's have a much higher tensile strength than oem.

To the OP, make sure you torque down the bolts in progression. Read some of the other threads about this or in the tech, people go over how to properly torque down the bolts. The final torque is AFTER you have ran the car and heated up the engine.

thanks guys i replaced head gasket and used new bolts oem. Worked out good, that solved my problem. And thanks James for letting me know about the final torque i will do that to.
