Vehicle Speed Sensor

So I had wondered if it was my gauge cluster or my vss that had gone bad when my speedometer stopped working. I unplugged the harness and it didn't seem corroded so I had purchased a VSS and cluster, what should the actual VSS look like when it's taken out and are there two of them?

I purchased one on ebay and the guy sent me two.. so I wanted to make sure...

It's a single unit. Mostly black plastic, with a smaller, white plastic gear on the end of it. If your speedo stops working, then the either the VSS is dead, the connector is shot (most common), or the connection between the sensor and the ECU, or the ECU and the cluster is broken (never heard of this before). It's a fairly simple system.

Just a single small connector? All I see is a black plastic base, and then a yellowish gear connected to it... is that it?

I had a similar problem with my car. My speed cluster simply stopped working for me one day. When I looked into it I found that the connector had actually burned out. Depending on the mileage on the car it could be electrical. The vss going on you sounds a little weird but possible.

alright i just got my new vss in and was wondering what the easiest way to get the other out i know its a 10mm bolt its just hard as hell to get to and a mount right beside it makes it near impossible w/o takin everything apart

this is for a 96 gst btw, its not a 420a just didnt feel like starting a new thread

Well I'm not sure about a 4g63, but I use a really long extension to get it out and install it.

man i tried i got like 10'' extension but its literally right below the throttle body and the thickness on the wall of the bit is too thcik theres like a cm or 2 between the bolt and the mount wall, its ridiculous

Maybe a longer extension and a swivel head?
I'm not sure if there is a trick to it or not.

heck idk its start to piss me off though im sure ill figure it out though, always do, was just hoping there might be an easier way or more sufficient, im lazy

take out the battery and tray and the windshield washer fluid tank...it will be a lot easier to get too.
