Does any one have any information about variable vein turbos as found on a 6.0 liter Powestroke diesel? All I know is that a solenoid can change the pitch of the exhaust gases on the turbine and has the effect of a twin turbo setup. Can any one correct me if I have this wrong or give me some information on how it works? Are any of these variable vein turbos availible to be put on a DSM? Thanks

the book Maximum boost by corky bell had a small section on these types of turbos. The book is a bit old 1997, and yet the turbo has still not caught on. Yes you can use it on any application but would it be feasable? I would stick to what is known and simple. Most people barely have the knowledge to read understand and perform the forumlas for compressor flow maps and such.

The comcept of this turbo is similar to as you have described, with the viens closed it will allow the turbo to spool faster then as they open it will yield more power.

I guess you mean VNT???

VNT = Varaible Nozzle Turbo; or
VGT = Varaible Geometry Turbo

I have some info about this kind of turbos. As far as I have read the VNT technology is excellent because it reduce (almost eliminate) turbo lag. In fact, I have one complete brand new mitsubishi VNT turbo for our application. It is a Mitsubishi turbo with a TD04HL VNT turbine, with 15T compressor. I haven't installed yet so I can't tell you if it work as good as it suppose to do, but as soon as we finish this project I will be very gladd to let everybody in this forum know how does it works (results on 1/4mi track). I bought this turbo directly from MHI in Japan. I haven't installed it because I want to make all other "common" mods first and left the turbo for the last mod. In that way I will be able to compare the TDO5H-14B to the VNT TDO4HL-15T and see which one gives me better results.

I believe the turbo I bought was from a 94-97 Saab Aero. Some other cars with Factory VNT turbos were the: Chrysler Turbo-IV (89-90 Lebaron GTC VNT) and as far as I know the new Renault Megane RS also use a VNT Turbo. The turbo used by chryler was a Garret VNT.

Go to www.thedodgegarage.com enter to the "turbo Database" on the FWD Tech section. Take a look on articles #12, 19 and 49. Article #49 explain how those the VNT technology works

Good luck!!! :thumb:
