I seem to remember a trick a certain someone I know did to bypass the need for one.

You'll Need:
A long socket...I think a 14-16mm will do the trick
A hammer
A steady hand

And basically all you do is position the socket on top of the spring and give it a good, solid smack. Keepers tend to fly around so keep your eye out for them.

:idontknow:
If you can't find a compressor then you could give it a shot.

Works great for disassembly.

For assembling, you need a compressor of some type. I slot-cut a cheap deep well socket (around 17-19mm) and compress the spring using a large C-clamp. The slot in the socket allows you to slide the keepers in with ease.

It's been a year or so since I've had to assemble a head, but I did three heads within three months and that C-clamp compressor worked super-slick when I was in rhythm.
