Hello to all the DSM Tuner Junkies,
Today is another miserable day in my life when i can't drive my 90' Tsi awd. I love the car to absolute pieces. Don't have any clue how to fix my problem. I have searched the forums for a while and still nothing. I would be in anyones dept to find a fix. I bought the car about 4 months ago an it was running strong. Little bits of rust and corrosion. I would ad that the car has 155,000miles and does have good records of replacements of various parts. Shafts, timing belts and brakes and such. I guess i should start the problem first. I have put the car on the drag strip for a test run to find out where i was starting out. The car ran smooth, 14.9sec in the 1/4, not bad I've been told. Stock the car remains with exceptions of cross drills on the front, k/n filter in the canister, adjustable struts all the way around. A plak on the drivers visor reminds me that a previous owner had taken first place in a covered bridge rally event. Sounds like the car had balls at one point. Well i guess i could say that i might have broke something that makes the car smoke like a chimney. I opened up the car one morning with a gentel push of the pedal that led me to 110mph down a highway, followed by a slight cloud of smoke as i pushed the motor. When i stopped at my first intersection to look both ways, smoke poured out from under the hood instantly, stopping became an enemy. Accelerating became another of my dreds. Well the problem is on the table. I see smoke coming from what looks like the underside of the Turbo when running. I also get that to stop when i pull the accelerator to around 3000+ rpms. Its like the smoke bypasses the turbo when i ramp up the rpms. At this point, i have left her sitting due to lack of money and wits. I know enough to get myself into trouble but trust or lack the people to trust looking into her muscles. I am planing on trying a thicker oil in hopes that the problem exists in her valves. I have been told to get the valves adjusted. The motor is still strong, and the turbo is still spooling 14 psi. I am losing oil by about a quart when i drive it more than a half hour to an hour. No clear dripping, but when started, only moments until it seeps smoke from the underside of the motor/turbo. The smoke smells like oil burning and blue in the haze of dust, possibly an oil line? but why would it move out the exhaust pipe if rpms are up. I have done little to get into the problem, besides removing the shields, and do i have to put them back on??

Help Me Please, Rusty Old Smoker :talon:

Pull off the LICP and check and see if there is alot of oil in it. If so the smoking is caused by blown turbo seals.
Otherwise you can run a leakdown test to pinpoint exactly what the problem may be.

If it's coming out the exhaust then it's either bad valve seals, the turbo oil seal or even a headgasket failure.

When valve seals go bad you generally have smoke on startup (oil pools onto the pistons from gravity) and on accelleration.

The turbo oil seal can fail when the turbo shaft experiences excess latereral play due to bearing failure. You can check this by removing the intake accordian and checking the compressor-side play.

Headgasket failure will show up on a compression test and if you find coolant in the oil / oil in the coolant.

Good luck and nice choice in car :thumb: :dsm:

And the world is a better place for it.

Good trick, with hydraulic lifters.
