Hey guys I just bought a 98 talon 420a with 150k miles. Im planning on turboing it so im gonna head over to the pick and pull and grab a turbocharger off a vw jetta. Can you guys tell me what other parts I need so I dont blow up my engine. Also do I need new injectors and a FMU? thanks guys.

It would help to know what turbo you want to run.

You need to do a lot to properly turbo a 420a. If you want to make any real amount of power it's a total waste of money when you can buy a TSI/GST/GSX for less that is already turboed and don't have traction/gear ratio problems that the nonturbo will have.

If you do turbo it, the short gear ratios will majorly limit traction, as well as you needing to rebuild pretty much the entire car for real power.

Turbo vs nonturbo heads are designed in a totally different way. In a nonturbo head you want it to be ported as much as possible where as with a turbo head you want to port it for the best port velocity.

The bottom end is high compression which is bad on a turbo car, so you can either rebuild it for low compression or never run much boost on those weak rods and high compression pistons.

The turbo out of the VW is most likely going to cost more than you should pay to install it. There are plenty of parts out there to put on MHI turbos on 420a cars. Plus if you are staying on stock internals 8PSI should be where you keep the boost, it is true you can run 12 PSI on some motors but honestly you shouldn't push a motor with 150k on it if you are new to turboing cars.

A good turbo for you would be a 13g off a 1g auto DSM. The 13g is small and offers great spool, I do believe it is actually faster spooling than the T-25 but I may be wrong, I honestly have never considered the two to be a option since I have a 14b stock. The 13g will also offer a safe boost solution as your motor can't really run much boost.

Don't forget you will need something to tune with such as Megasquirt. You should also get a boost gauge and 110% buy a wideband like the AEM or the LC-1, the new prosport gauge is supposed to be decent but I don't believe they work with link if you ever decide to go with a preturboed set up in the future and want to keep the gauge.

What exactly are you looking to do?

Ok so I'm just going to give you a heads up. Everyones probably going to tell you not to and get one that's factory turboed. But from what I've read on here it can be done with stock internals and everything its just probably not going to last very long MOST people somewhere between 10k-20k depending on strength of motor. Get a compression test to see if it is a good healthy motor then decide if you want to turbo it with the stock motor. Just know it probably won't last to to long. But just look at tech forums there any and everyrhing ull need/need to kno. I have a 420a eclipse and was thinking about turboing it but after getting input and reading a lot I decided to just get a gsx or gst. Because I wouldn't want to turbo it then have it blow a year later. N it'll cost you a good amount of money to rebuild with forged piston n rods and everything else you need to do. So ya get compression test make sure its healthy , read a lot and then decide. Good luck bro.

I am tossing in a K03 turbo from the stock 1.8t jettas/vw beetles/passats/etc. This is a relatively small turbo. Im more than confident stock internals can handle it with all my compression tests running 10%-. K03s are mos def smaller than 14bs and t-25s. I just need someone to tell me what i need to do to toss that thing in there.

Exhaust mani, fpr, in line fuel pump, bigger injectors, down pipe, bov, turbo to intake piping. Something to managebigger injectors. You can buy kits for the 420a. Be cheaper to do that compared to finding the different parts and building it urself. But ill tell you this now, plan on blowing the motor or head gasket alot. I had 420a for 2 years and all I did was rebuilds after rebuilds. Even with good parts put in the car. Pistons, rods, you know the works. Also just so you know don't plan on ever running 500hp or even 400 prob not even 300.with that many miles on the car I wouldn't even try it. When I turbos mine it had 60k on it, I ran stock 8psi. Lasted a2 weeks and that was with proper tune. So good luck on your build. Oh also look up hahn racecraft. That have good 16g kit for your car. Its comes with everything you will need.

People with 4g cars need to stay out of 420a thread because usually they spread misinformation.

Such as:
- you need bigger injectors
- you NEED something to tune with

You can turbo your car for under $1000 and you'll be in the ball park of 250whp at ~10psi. There is a write up in the tech articles on how to do it.

I am not going to give you a parts list because it will be good for you to do some research and learn about what you are doing (also I'm typing this from a phone and it's a PITA). You most likely will NOT want to boost your car at 150k. You should atleast freshen it up with new bearing, arp head studs, and new rings... It's only about $800 on top of standard rebuild costs for forged rods and pistons and you'll have a block ready to handle almost anything you can throw at it.

Also the head on our cars has been proven to reach 500whp in STOCK form so don't listen to that shit.

Mine is 420a, started off with stage 2 turbo kit from hahn, had a portfueler(which had its benefits, removed due to tuning issues with megasquirt), ended up now with a fmi(used to be side mount) and a 16g, prob gonna upgrade turbo soon. Although, I have done a complete rebuild, all parts fixed in trans, entire engine rebuild and machine work, so Im starting off with a clean slate, b4 the rebuild I was running just under 20 lbs believe it or not! Hoping to get back there with no/minimal issues but..shit in one hand and wish in the other. Anyways, if your gonna go to the trouble of rebuilding, I say go all the way!! Bc...why not? The only thing I'd personally worried about is my trans failing before anything else..don't ask me why LOL. I feel like I have a premonition of it just breaking for who knows what reason after like one year. Awesome!
