I need to replace the compressor o-ring seal on my 14b. Is it possible to undo the V-band clamp and just remove the CHRA without removing the exhaust housing? If not, how hard is it to get the turbo off with out removing the manifold?

Yes, it is possible to pull the chra without removing anything more than the heat shields.
0. Spray the heat shield bolts with PB blaster. Do it again a few hours later. repeat until it looks like engine leaks oil. Breaking off bolts in the manifold sucks.
0a. remove heat shields
1. Drain the coolant
2. remove Radiator with fans attached
3. remove intake hose
4. remove j-pipe
5. remove oil feed line banjo bolt from cylinder head
6. remove oil feed line banjo bolt from top of CHRA
7. remove water line banjo bolt from the front of CHRA
8. remove oil drain bolts from CHRA -- do NOT bend or otherwise disturb the oil dran tube more than is absolutly neccessary or it will crack and leak.--
9. notice there is a water line on still attached to the rear of the CHRA, follow it to the thermostat housing and remove the rubber hose from the line.
10. Everything should now be loose from the CHRA. Remove the band clamp.
11. with a SOFT face hammer, gently tap the compressor housing and the CHRA should pop loose from the turbo housing. Being careful not to disturb the oil drain line, fish the CHRA out and carefully set it on a bench. Don't bend the fins of the turbine wheel with rough handling or :tease: by letting it roll of a work bench. (Don't ask how I know this)

Now take it to your friendly turbo shop and have them rebuild and balancec it, or ask the community and we will post the DIY guide to a MHI turbo rebuild. It has been posted many times before and MAY even be on this site if you search for it, I am headed back to work now. This should take roughly 1-2 hours with common hand tools. You will need a 19 and 22 or 24 mm box wrench to get the banjo bolts out, otherwise its all common toolbox stuff. Good Luck.
