turbo or no turbo?

so this is the deal... i originally started with a 2.0 4g63 nt as a replacement for the blown 1.8 that i had in my car. but somehow things have gone horribly wrong and now i am stuck with east coast performance. they are trying to find an ecu for my car because the ones that they have been using have been the wrong ones. they told me that the easiest way to go would to be to turbo the car because they have all the working parts to go that route. so far they have had my car for about a month and a half, just looking for an engine harness alone. so i'm stuck and i don't wanna wait for them to look for another ecu. i kinda wanna get it over.

my question is should i let them turbo the jdm motor. it doesn't have upgraded internals. and i mean i'm afraid to see where this might go since the tranny was from the 1.8. any advice would be great advice because i am totally lost.

What the hell? Turbo for sure is kick ass, but I personally wouldn't do it for that reason. If they change everything necessary to turbo your car properly (change transmission, add side mount intercooler, intake, proper ecu, oil squirters, stronger pistons, fuel pump, etc.) then why not? But damn, I don't know why but I have a feeling that this has "disaster waiting to happen" written all over it!

For the amount of money it would take to correctly turbo your car, you can find a 1g turbo and work your way from there with less money.

Yeah, I agree with him. I would just go right ahead and get the ECU from another shop. If u really want turbo, sell your car and buy a 1g stock turbo car.

ok basically the shop that i took my car to do the engine harness wiring screwed up and has been holding my car for a month and a half because they didn't order the correct harness at first and now they couldn't find an ecu for it. now i have the opportunity to turbo the car. they are offering a really good deal on the whole thing... and i was wondering whether or not it was a good idea for me to go that route.

the reason i haven't looked for another car after my swap was because i have built this car up from the ground. it's like my baby. the turbo will basically be the stock one similar to the one on a gst and the engine will be able to take it... i was just confused as to whether it would be a good idea to go this route.

i agree the money you'll be putting the car to make it a tsi, i would put that money aside and sell the car to buy a TSi model , i would go with AWD well worth it.

I sympathize for your situation, I really do. Please don't take this advice to be harsh, even though it is blunt. Consider my words as trying to be helpful, I really hope you find a way to get your car running.

After this post, your situation does make more sense, but it doesn't sound like a smart move. We have the advantage of not being emotionally involved, so we're more impartial. If someone told me "Hey, I took my car to a garage for some work, and they really screwed it up and now my car has been sitting there for months. But now they offered to do more complicated work for me, should I do it?"... then my thought would not be "Are they offering a good price?", it would be "Get that car away from that garage and over to a good one."

I know it sounds like a good deal, and it probably is if you're only considering the upfront price. But if they can't do a ECU/Engine harness thing without leaving you hanging for months, how much faith do you really have on them doing a full turbo conversion? It doesn't sound like they're giving you honest, good advice; it sounds like they're upselling you. You've already proven to them that you'll wait even while they screw up for months, so they're not worried about you running when they screw up a second time. If they can upsell you on this turbo conversion, they know they've can upsell you later or give you excuses and just wait.

I don't know this garage, they could be honest hardworking people that simply can't find a supplier for a part they need. But if it were me, when someone makes a big mistake and doesn't make good on it, I wouldn't go with more work from the same people. It's like trying to dig your way out of a hole.

This advice is all about the "Should I turbo with this garage" aspect of your post, not the "Should I turbo my car at all" part. It's tempting because it's a good price, but it doesn't sound like a smart move. Let us know what you end up doing, and if they ever fix the ECU problem. Good luck!

I agree with Jumpfroggy. They already messed up once on a "relatively" simple task compared to turboing a car and now they are just trying to see if they can make some more money off of a guy instead of just fixing what YOU want fixed and getting it out of there for a decent price that you deserve after having to wait. If it's a professional shop they should do it right the first time and fix the harness before they start trying to talk you into upgrading. Just my .02 but I would just get the harness done and get my car out of there in order. If you really consider your car as your baby do whatever you can to get it back home and in working order as soon as possible.
