Turbo my GS?

I've been set on tuning my 99 eclipse gs...however, many people tell me to just get a gs-t. They say that the 420a isn't capable of handling a turbo and I should just get the gs-t b/c of the 4g63 engine.

Sure it's "easier" to just get a car that's turbocharged from the factory (GST, GSX, TSi), but there's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to turbo the 420a. A decent amount of power can be made on the stock internals alone, but with forged internals, a good turbo/fuel setup, and the willingness to learn how to tune it all, the sky's the limit.

WHile Zero has a beast car on paper so far and will probably be very fast it has yet to run or hit the dyno so that isn't a valid argument.

I suppose you're right about this statement. I shall use crab1092 as my next example since he has dyno numbers/quarter mile times to back up his work. awddynamite as well

IMO: Going from a 420a to a GST isn't really an "upgrade" especially if you put a lot of time and money into your 420a NT.

I'd say go big, and opt for the GSX.

Selling the car and opting for the stock turbo setup which your going to end up replacing anyways you might as well get the extra 2 wheels while your at it.

And if there is anything that I've learned over the years tuning both my 420a and my friends GSX's and GST's is that they all break the same way. 1G's, 2G's, Turbo, Non Turbo, 2wd, AWD, once you add more boost and more fuel, something's gotta give.

What size injectors are you using? I dynoed at 373whp with my 550s. I will be upgrading to 1000s soon...just curious.

There are a lot of 420a's making high hp numbers, unless you want the awd, I'd stick with you 420a, more unique.

it sucks to be in your position because i was in the same one. i owned a 99 eclipse gs 10th anniversary and when i decided i wanted to turbocharge it, i discovered a number of things different from a non turbo setup and a turboed eclipse. besides the engine beeing different, there is so much more that isnt the same from your transmission, to your shocks, ecm, cluster, breaks, axels etc.... now its up to you to decide weather you love the car enough to invest the money to do the proper setup or to sell it and buy a gst or gsx. personally i would just buy a gst or gsx because there wont be any headakes or problems that you would experience through a transplant.

Just go back to your 4g63 threads. Dont come into the 420a forums and tell him hes better off just selling his 420a and getting a 4g63. At least if your going to say that give a good reason other then theres less headaches.
Its not a transplant, putting a turbo in a 420a is mostly doing some reading and bolts ons. You can then run a reasonable amount of boost, just like the 4g63. Now if you goals are high then you are going to have to rebuild the engine with forged internals lowered compression the whole deal, just like you would have to with the 4g63. Dont sell what you have to try and make things easier, because its not that simple. A gst costs more money, so selling the gs and getting a gst isnt that simple because now you need to dig up that extra cash that you would have been spending on your turbo kit for the 420a. Now you want to go faster but you used that money on getting a gst... You see my point?

Correct me if I am wrong but the gst comes 12psi from the factory and 210hp @ crank. Installing a turbo kit on the 420a with 8psi will get you closer to 220whp. (Hahns says with there kit you get 225-250whp)
Anyway, sorry for my rambling but please dont come into the 420a forums and say I would just sell it and get a 4g63... it makes me.. not so happy.

I'll go ahead and give a +MF1 to Ryan up there. It's been discussed time and time again. The GST would cost more, insurance is higher because it's factory turbocharged, and the benefits just aren't there plain and simple. A 420a can be just as strong, just as fast, just as powerful as a GST. The only reason to ever go 4G63 if you already have a 420, especially if you've already invested time and money into it, is for the AWD. And I doubt it's worth the upgrade and building an AWD unless your FWD is pushing 400+ to the wheels and just can't get the traction it needs on the streets... all of this is IMO.

I'm still not sure how someone else answering those types of questions irritates you.. but oh well . Listing out the parts someone would need for a turbo build is useful information, just block me so you don't have to read my answers anymore

I don't own a 420a powered dsm, but the 420a does seem to be a very well engineered platform to start with. I would think, starting with a sealed short block, you could get away with a light amount of boost and be content for a bit...

id say either stick with the 420a or go gsx.. 420a can do just as good as a gst. but if you want awd then go gsx. And also again it is more unique a 420a-t. especially when you roll up to all the ricers and they ask you what kinda engine you have

I boosted my RS and was like that for a year or 2, but then sold it and bought a 1g TSi AWD and couldn't be happier. Turboing the 420a is not for everyone, but taught me a lot about engines in general and carried over to the 4g63 quite easily.

Honestly though, if I were to do it all over again, I would have just gotten a factory turbo'ed car. If I would have known about all the money I spent on my 420a (and it wasn't even that modded), I would have just manned up and got a factory turbo and saved a lot of money. Hell, I got a built engine, 50 trim turbo setup car in great shape for $3100.
