Turbo HP ratings

As I was looking for a new turbo, I noticed that they all have HP ratings. If a Turbo says it is rated to 400 HP, does this mean 400 WHP? Also, does that mean thats how much the turbo can support? For example if i get a turbo rated to 400HP and dail the car into 400 HP, is it safe to run another 100 shot of Nitrous?

it means the capable range of the turbo.

a small16g quotes 320HP. which idealy, under a perfect tune, with all the right peices, it should do that.

optimum flow = quoted HP

In my experience, the turbo horsepower ratings are calculated by using the compressor map along with a simple rule of thumb. The maximum airflow the compressor can flow at 65% efficiency (in lb/min) is multiplied by a factor of 10 to give the turbo's horsepower rating. For example, a 20G is rated at 440 HP because the compressor can flow 44 lb/min at 65%. Usually this is a crankshaft horsepower rating, but this estimate tends to be a little on the conservative side, as 20G's have been proven to make over 400whp with a considerable degree of consistency.

Yeah, it also means every single supporting mod too, like fuel, air, and so on. You will need to support it thoroughly, no half a$$ing it either. Like the evo III BIG 16G, it is rated anywhere from 380-420 whp, I have seen it done on many cars. My buddies GST is pushing 397 with his, and I dont want to disclose mine, that is why I put the stock specs on my profile, but in the mean time, yeah, it means it COULD do it, that is the range its for....

Yes it will be safe to run as much nitrous as you want. The nitrous shot will add power completely independant of what the turbo is doing. A 100 shot of nitrous will make ~100whp regardless of what turbo you're running or what kind of airflow the engine is getting. Nitrous provides its own oxygen to make power, that's how it works.

Of course that assuming you have a motor and fuel system that can handle a 400hp turbo and a large shot of nitrous on top of that.

I was thinking of running a smaller turbo and then have Nitrous for a race now and then but i didnt know if that was safe for the turbo, because the car would be putting out more HP than the turbo is rated for. Sounds like it works fine. Thanks for the help.

Yeah. The "rating" is for how much it might be able to put out, not a limit of how much it can stand.
