I just put in a rebuilt engine, a new transmission, an EVO III Big 16 turbo and EVO III exhaust manifolded, a hallman cockpit boost controller(which I haven't touched yet), a after market boost gauge, and all new hoses, belts, plugs, and a lot of other stuff. I have been breaking in my new stuff. I decided to push it a little more. My car runs great but once I hit 20 psi of boost my car starts to hiccup or shutter and then it acts like it is back firring and a puff of smoke comes out. Any help would be great. Thanks a lot. My car is a 1992 Plymouth Laser Turbo.

Please fill out your vehicle profile so we have a better idea what's going on.

If you just put what you listed on your car, you are most likely hitting fuel cut. This is when your ECU sees a certain amount of airflow and cuts off fuel to "protect" the engine from seeing any damage. It's a safeguard from the factory in case there is a malfunctioning wastegate etc leading to open boost.

I posted more info on my profile. thanks

Ok I am getting a lot of help thanks to all. Could some one give me a list of what I need. Thanks

WOW you have no fuel mods, fuel control and you want to know why your car is messing up when your running 20PSI!!!

Fuel cut will just cut the motor out, what your feeling is timing pull and lots of it. All from the detonation your causing from a lean condition. You need to turn the boost to 12psi or lower or that motor is going to burn up!!

I don't appreciate the sarcasm but thanks for the info.

I know enough about my car to be dangurous my engine went last month replaced it like I said before and had the stuff I listed put on. I don't do my own work on my car. I know I am what is considered a newbie but any help is appreciated. I would appreciate a list of what would be good to put into my car so I don't burn my engine up. I am driving my car very gentle I am not pushing it. Please give me some info that I can share with my mechanic. thanks

he isn't trying to be rude man.

your turbo is shoving tons of air into you engine at 20 psi. Because you haven't added any fuel yet you are running very lean and detonating repeatedly (which is shortening the life of your engine significantly). Because of the detonation that your computer is seeing its pulling the timing out in an attempt to save the motor from melt down. its also taking away tons of power in the process.

as suggested you need to turn down the boost to a maximum of 14 psi until your done with the fuel mods. your gonna need at least a 190lph fuel pump and 550cc injectors. you may want a bigger pump and even bigger injectors if you have big plans for this car. your also going to need a wideband o2 sensor and gauge to make sure in the future that your running with the right amount of fuel. As for controlling the added fuel their are many options but i would suggest you take a look at DSM link if your really looking to take your car to the next level. when all is said and done it will cost you some good $ But, you wont believe how much quicker your car will be when you have the correct amount of fuel and your computer stops pulling the timing out from under you.

you may want to do a search on here for the fuel pump rewire mod. which you should do with your current fuel pump and the new one.

List of stuff I would do for your car.

Fuel:
Walbro 255hp Pump
Fuel pump Rewire
AFPR
6an fuel feed line
650cc or Larger

Tunablilty:
2g MAS
SAFC up to 650cc injectors
DSMlink for anything larger than 650cc
Logger of some sorts

Cooling:
FMIC
or
Water/Meth injection
or
Both

Guages:
Wideband O2
Boost 30/30 no need for 60psi

You NEED to do all of this!!!!

or

Just turn the boost down to 15psi!

as for right now. get your boost turned down. 14 psi would be good. 12 would be even safer. and thats still plenty of power for you while your checking out what parts you would like.

If you are looking for the simplest way to solve this problem take a look at kits offered by some of the DSM tuning company's on this site. Guys like slow boy racing offer kits like this Slowboy Racing, Inc. :: DSM :: Fuel :: Fuel Kits :: SBR Fuel Mod. Package
that have a pump, injectors and a fuel controller.

Make sure your mechanic is familiar with doing performance tuning on these cars. if he isn't than try looking up a reputable tuning shop in your area to have the parts installed and tuned.

Good luck
Greg

sorry dude over reacted

Now I know this is going to make me sound like a really big newbie. The turbo I had put in is set at what ever it was from the vendor I got it from I haven't upped the boost at all. So can I still lower the boost.

You can't run any lower boost than what the wastegate spring on your turbo allows it to make. I really don't think the factory actuator on your EVO III 16G has you running 20psi. You installed the Hallman but say you haven't touched it yet. Does this mean it is unscrewed as far as it will go? The EVO III 16G flows a hell of alot more air than your stock 14B did. Also, you have to realize that people on here aren't being rude or sarcastic. It's just that upgrading your fuel system is a very important and basic mod. Too many people buy a DSM, slap all these parts on, and then post about problems without reading/researching everything first. Upgrade and rewire your fuel pump, get larger injectors, get a way to controll them (AFC or Link), and definitely buy yourself a datalogger. Do some searches and reading and you will learn the right way to do things and what works best for other people with similar mods.

I would just bypass your MBC completely by running a line directly from the J-pipe(pressure source) to the wastegate actuator until you get something to tune/log with.

I didnt mean to come off being sarcastic, when I saw your post of 20psi it just made me cringe, LOL. Dont want you to lose a new motor. If you remove the mbc and run straight off the jpip you should only see 9-12psi of boost.
