I got this Talon back in september, traded my 91 silverado with 247,000 miles and $400 for a '95 Talon with 157,000 miles, ESi, stick, fun little car, not too modded, but also not too well taken care of from the looks of it, Its got rust on the pinch welds, rockers in front of the rear wheels, where the hatch drains go, underside of the hatch in that lip, and the side rails. Has Strut tower rust, but somebody welded some patches in (very poorly). This summer I'm expecting to have it painted and have all the body work done and have all the rust addressed. My uncle's gonna be doing the body work and paint and rust taken care of, ive got a couple of pictures of the rust, but i wanna know how bad other people think it is. I'll include some pics of the rust

I would probably sell the car and buy a different DSM. If you really want to keep her, I would find a friend to fix the rust that can turn into safety problems (mainly strut towers) and then drive it as a daily.

" My uncle's gonna be doing the body work and paint and rust taken care of,"

So what is the problem, sounds like you got it taken care of......

Personally I wouldn't deal with that kind of rust, but that is just my opinion. (where I live there are a lot rust free cars)

It drives me crazy when I go to mod the car and spend more time cleaning up rust spots than doing what I want to.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that it's gonna be covered by my uncle, what gauge metal would you recommend for the side rails underneath? Do you think I should redesign the underbody in that aspect? What gauge would you recommend for the body? Do you think i should make the wheel wells without places for the water to gather? like flush

I would keep fat friends out of this car, part it out then junk the shell take your tax return and buy a decent 1g turbo!!!

I have to ask, if your uncle is experienced in body work than why do you need to have these questions answered from people who can't see what is going on in person. Your uncle should know what metal to use, how to do it, and what needs to be done, or he is not qualified for such a job. Realistically i would do like others have said, either sell it and find a good clean running one, or find a clean shell and swap your drive train and interior over. The value of those 420a cars is just really not worth the cost and effort of repairing all that rust and them re-painting the car. You traded a truck that was probably worth 1500-2000 bucks for a car that is worth about 400-700 in that condition.

I ask these questions so that when me and him actually talk about the subject, and when we actually decide to start getting to work this summer, I have suggestions instead of not understanding at all what he's talking about. Would you recommend doing any other work that would strengthen the chassis more than repairing factory rot?
