All of my timing marks are aligned but the engine is not at tdc according to the crank pulley notch and the screw driver method. How to tell if the trigger plate is on backwards. I got a longblock and did the timing and it makes this terrible ticking noise.

You pretty much hit it on the nose. Unscrew the spark plug in cylinder one 1 and put a long screw driver in it. With the timing belt off (and both cam dowels pointing up at ~12 o'clock), rotate the crank until the screwdriver on cyl 1 is at maximum height. This will tell you that the engine is at TDC. If the crank trigger plate is NOT at the crank mark on the front case, your plate is on backwards. Aside from that, if it is backwards and you ran the car, chances are you have some bent valves.

Also, my method is, take a look at the trigger plate itself. You should be able to see the outline of the crank sprocket on one side, and the outline of the balance shaft sproket on the other side. (so long as you didn't clean it off)
