I recently purchased a transmission from a private source. It is not installed in the car yet because I think I may have discovered a slight problem with it. The gear selector (the one with the big weight on it) moves freely when I try to move it. I have another transmission that I used as a reference and when I move the selector on it, it clicks into place, as if it were selecting a gear. With the new trans, this isnt the case. It moves easily back and forth but it doesnt engage anything. I took the cover off the end and those two nuts that are on the ends of the two shafts are loose. Also, when I turn the input shaft, it doesnt move anything on the inside of the trans, it too spins freely. All that I know about this trans is that it has 3000 miles on it since the rebuild. I would like to take the bell housing off the trans to take a peek inside but Im weary of doing that. Can somebody walk me through it and give me some tips on what to look for?

I found the problem. I took apart the trans using the vfaq trans rebuild tutorial.

This picture shows the piece I found laying in the bellhousing.

This picture shows where the piece came from:

Does anybody know how to take apart the selector lever and shaft?
