420A Transmission assembly issue

I've got a used NVT-350 transmissions that I just bought that has about 90k miles on it that I'm getting ready to put in. the guy I bought it from took all the sensors out and put rags in all the holes (have my old sensors). Not really a problem except he pushed the gear that's for the speed sensor inside the engine which means I had to split the casing open to find it.

Now then were to my problem. I got the gear back in place and speed sensor bolted on and I'm now trying to put the two halfs of the trans together but it won't go all the way down. It's like it is hitting something but every rod bearing input shaft seems to all be lined up.

Wanted to see if there is some trick/procedure of some kind to get to completely come together like spinning the input shaft, messin with the shift levers etc.

If it's like the stock tranny do you have the reverse idler gear shaft holder lined up with it's casing hole? Also the shift rails. Keep in neutral.

I had to slightly heat the housing on on tranny case but it had been sitting for a long time

You are either binding one shift rail up on the bushing in the bellhousing or you are getting caught on the output shaft roller bearing. Pull the bellhousing off again, and get it on a table at eye level. Get a tub of petroleum jelly and grease up the output shaft bearing in place so it doesn't float around and get bound up, and lube the shift rail ends.

Sometimes its a bit tricky, I normally have some very long pick tools and screwdrivers handy to shift things ever so slightly while reassembling the case, and it doesn't hurt to have an extra set of hands to keep the shift rails aligned while gently putting the bellhousing case section back on. It's a 5 minute job that somehow takes 2 hours on occasion.
