Transfercase blewout

Well I am sure mine blew last night. Did a 5500 RPM lounch, and about 20 MPH it grinded, cracked, poped, clinked tell i disengaged the clutch. Now, every gear will engage for a coupleseconds but then it grinds, clinks, popes and stays there (kinda like when it pops out of gear in reverse)

Is this covvered by Mitsi? Besides a MBC and boost Gaguge + 3inch echuast my car is stock....

The Tcase recall has never been preformend. I been trying to get it in for the last 6 months but I live 150 miles from the dealership.


Oh can i drive the car home (1.25 miles) if I take out the drivline? Or the charge is 80 buck to get a flat bed out there and 4$ a mile.

That car is 15 years old. Mitsubishi isn't covering shit. The recall for the transfer case only involved the yoke seal at the rear of the transfer case. It was hard enough to get them to do the recall in the first place. I haven't heard of anybody getting a replacement transfer case from them when theirs blew out.

Put it on the flatbed. You cannot drive the car in the condition it is in, otherwise you will do more damage to the viscous coupling in the transmission.

Start searching the classifieds for a replacement transfer case. They shouldn't cost more than $200, and it's all of 5 bolts to replace it.

Yeah I was afread of that, not being able to get fix. Well, I was reading a lot about Tcase recall and it seemed that maybe it would be. What would have broken in my Tcase, a shaft?

And i don't really want to change it out myself. Just becuase I don't have a lift and it is a pain rolling around on the ground and even worse, no air tools. o and im about 100 miles from home.

Getting the t-case out without a lift isnt really as hard as you are thinking, you shouldn't need air tools. You just have to drop the downpipe to gain access to the t-case bolts and there are only five of those. Then slide it off the shafts. Reverse for install. Don't forget to re-fill it. Save yourself some money and do it yourself.

Qausimondo: I have replaced my rear t-case yoke seal 3 times now and it still leaks? Could the rear shaft yoke be worn? I didnt know the recall had to do with the rear seal. I will do some more research to see if my car is affected.

I assume mine is a 22 spline then, being made in late 90's. (IT IS A 91 though)

Seriously, don't be afraid to take off the T-case. It is a really easy job. Just like the guys above have said. The hardest part is probably filling it back up.

That, I don't know. I've been lucky enough not to have to replace the xfer case seals.

It's easy to replace. I got my transfer case recalled just a few months ago. I bought another talon and i wanted to get THAT one replaced and he said it was fine, just bring it in.

I can't look at it tell next weekend. I have no tools with me. I live 100 miles away, it's at my bros house now and his tools are with someone else right now.

Well pulled the Tcase off and found that the output side and input of it moves freely. So, with the Tcase off with car jacked up I put it in 1st gear and the wheels will not turn. I cycle through 1st- 5th and R and same thing. once well in 4th i moved the wheel's backwords and it cought and started to make the same horable noise as what I thought was the Tcase.

With the car lifted and Tcase off I can have someone spin the left wheel and me hold the right and they spin freely. In the same note someone can spin the left wheel and the right will spin oppisit of that one slowly.
