Somebody help me please, I bought a 1997 Tsi awd from a guy in detroit, and I cannot shift up or down unless i match the engine speed to about where it would be if it were in the gear im shifting to. If i dont match the engine speed and i try to shift it just grinds and wont go into gear. Im not sure how to tell, but the guy i got it from says that it is a shep tranny, if that matters.

Sounds like you might need a new clutch. Can you shift the car sitting still? Or does it grind going into 1st also ? If the clutch is trashed you wuld have to shift at engine speed to get it to go into gear, but you would have a hard time at start up also.

like what he said but also check to see where the clutch engages from the floor at. or do the clutch test and put it in first while not moving and rev it past 7000rpm. if it moves befor that you need a new clutch.

Sounds all too familiar...

You first need to see if your clutch is disengaging. I would first check that the clutch master cylinder is adjusted per the FACTORY MANUAL. I would then look at the slave and master cylinders. Followed by the clutch itself. Then finally the tranny.

I would guess that your clutch is not fully disengaging. I had a case of bad syncros for 1-2 and 2-3. The car would shift fine under 5k rpm, or above 5k rpm with light loads on the drive train. A car that needs engine speed matching 100% would mean horribly worn syncos, which I doubt you have.

Also before you get too far, make sure you have proper tanny fuild level and clean fluid...I know it sounds dumb.

In the best case scenario, could this be a dog box? How would you know? It certainly sounds like a clutch or synchros, but if it's a shep tranny, someone could have gone crazy and gotten the top of the line...
