1990 6 BOLT (I AM IN THE PROCESS OF A 20 OVER OEM REBUILD) Well it took me a week of being in the garage after work till about 11PM at night putting my engine together, I didnt realize how long it would take to check so many gaps and clearances, but I got my bottom end in and just installed the top. All done I thought, but I just shined a flashlight down my cylinders when pistons are at the bottom, and on 2 of the pistons the 1st compression rings are positioned at exactly half way on the intake relief of the piston. It looks real close to the thrust/wrist cut out area of the piston, does this matter on the top since the 2nd ring seals it off still? Or should I pull the two pistons and reinstall them? They must have shifted fooling around with the ring compressor, I know oil rings move, but is this a problem?

The rings spin around the piston inside the bore so it doesn't really matter how they are positioned. The position of the gaps will change when the engine is first started.

If your still rebuilding it then I would definately suggest to pull it out now and fix it. You have the engine already apart so dont take the risk of something not working correctly.

^ What you said. I talked to a bunch of people here locally and they said not to worry about it, one reputable guy told me hes taken apart perfectly fine engines that have had all the rings lined up in a row.

Anyways, I took the two pistons out and reinstalled them for the piece of mind.:talon:
