Took my exhaust housing off and found my turbine wheel is white? Plugs look ok and reads normal on my wide band. Is it suppost to be white colored? I know when i got it it was black with carbon? Thanks guys and i can post pictures

White carbon on the turbine = good tune. As long as the entire inside of the housing isn't white, you're ok.

Really?? Never knew that. So this is good?

^ ^ That's not bad at all. Yours is sort-of a thin white film.

I've had turbos sent to me to be rebuilt that had the inlet flange (from the manifold) literally snow white. If you're that lean on pump gas, you're in the danger zone.

Hey Justin,

Here is the turbine wheel from the same turbo, how does it look?

Speaking of, I'm thinking of salvaging this turbo but I need center housing. It's a BEP T04E 57 trim and all I need is the center housing (not the full CHRA) and I can rebuild it.

Do you know where I can get a cheap (new or used) center housing?

Can you tell me what the name of the center housing is so I can try to hunt one down myself?

I found these two on eBay, would they work?

Like it wasn't getting enough oil. Look at the heat scores on the shaft where the turbine-side journal bearing rides.

Either track one down from a turbo parts dealer or look on eBay. Garrett center housings aren't that expensive.

A Garrett T3 center housing.

Yes, and yes...although the second one is a waste unless you're planning on plumbing coolant (and that's a pain in the ass).

Before widebands and EGT there was tuning by spark plug color. Thats how I tuned in the late 70s and early 80s. By seat of the pants and spark plug color only. No other tools. Today we have widebands and egt and most dont bother to look at the more reliable methods of checking plug color or turbine wheel color. Dont know if any of my observations are going to be helpful but I thought it would be of interest to some. I do a lot of turbo swapping so I get to see what turbine wheels look like after they have been run on a car. Also valve color tells a story as well, I may add some pics of that as well. First up is what a stock turbo will look like on a factory tune. I have installed WB on a few bone stock cars before tuning begins and the a/f is going to be well into the low 9s and my evo1 was in the high 8s the way I got the car. This little turbo is from a smart car. No doubt stock factory tune.

Next I have the following four wheels from various turbos. The bottom two are evo turbines. The redish one is JDM. There fuel has an additive in it that turns the wheel that color. The lower left is stock evo with retune but dont know any A/F ratio. The top left wheel is from a car tuned with 93/alky(100%) and was tuned st 10.5 a/f. The top right is 93/alky with tune at or around 12.0.

This last set is of most interest to me because the top right is fresh off my evo1 from the last three weeks tuning. The a/f was in the 11-11.2 area on 93/alky and I am thinking its going to make more power at 10.5. I just didnt have the ignition to run that rich. every time I tryed to fatten it up some I got misfires. The lower left is my old 25g wheel from my yellow car. The orange color is a octane booster. I dont know what a/f was at. That was long before I had a/f gauge in the car. Was tuning by spark plugs at that point. But the turbine wheel is the right color light brown to dark grey. The lower left is from 3052 turbo I bought from a freind of mine. He made 411whp/380tq with the turbo on straight 93 octane and drove the car for quite some time on the tune. Dont know the a/f but the color of the wheel is spot on. For those who arent aware light grey and whitish is on the lean side.

For the record, here's an example of the carbon color of a turbine wheel & housing from a car that was tuned a little too lean.

Seeing as this turbo is a knockoff Evo III 16G, it was undoubtedly installed on a car with a stock fuel system and run at 20psi.

mine looks very similar to that... maybe the fuel pump is on it's way out... I'm still using the stock one.. i have a 190 but it's not installed yet. Guess i should get on that.

I don't hear that claim being made too often.

Or that one.

Care to elaborate?

Oh, and here's my T25 after it decided to eat itself, followed by a 55 mile trip home from the track. Wideband had it at about 11.2 AFR.
