I just found out my timing is off. My tbelt is lined up properly, but the spark timing is most likely off, thus my car's lack of power lately.

My question is, could having your car's timing be off affect the turbo in a bad way in some way? And if so, how?

I can't imagine anything of that sort affecting the turbo. A turbo usually goes bad from something going into the fins or being starved of oil. Timing being off would mess with the flow of exhaust gasses to the turbo, but that's not enough to mess anything up. This is from my understanding of how stuff works. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

The reality is that in the past 2,000 miles, I've gone through 2 turbos. I couldn't find what was wrong with my car until now. When the timing was off, the turbo actually sounded different and more importantly wouldnt pull nearly as hard. That is why I feel that having your spark timing off would adversly affect the health of the turbo.

When you took the first turbo off, what did you find? Massive shaft play? Bent fins? What? If the timing is the only issue (other than the turbo) you have, then I don't think it would be crazy to consider that being the problem.....unless you were unfortunate enough to receive two bad turbos(that's also saying it's getting it's fair share of oil.) What kind of turbos have you had recently.

Keep us up on this. Good luck. :thumb:

Yea, I agree. It wouldve been quite unlucky to have gotten two bad turbos in a row.

Both turbos that went bad had shaft play when I took them off. Each were on about 1000 miles a piece. Can anyone say for sure that this could cause my problem?

The issue of too much or too little timing advance would be more harmful to the motor than the turbo. If anything timing can affect spool, but an absence or overabundance thereof would not create the conditions you've experienced. You either had bad turbos out of the box, or you have a recurring issue that hasn't been solved and will keep eating turbos until you fix it. I'd look into the oil feeds and returns and also pull each turbo apart to see if there was any fin damage on the hot side or cold side.

Hope that helps,

Andy
