We went to do my timing belt today and once we got into there, noticed my V-belts were rubbing the outside of the timing cover. Even crazier, once we got the lower timing cover off we realized the crank pulley had worn through the cover! There's no play in the crankshaft and the pulley is in good condition (the rubber is all good), the timing cover also was bolted down correctly and everything. What else could this be? WTF

After a while, the heat from the engine can and will warp the plastic cover. Mine was the same way... I just bought a new one (not cheap), but it fits great. Just make sure when you take it off, you know where each bolt goes, because there's like 3 or 4 different sizes of bolts around the lower timing cover.

Here's what mine looked like:

hmm, are you sure there's no play in the crankshaft? Have you tried a good prybar to see if you can move it, or run it to see if it moves? Is the timing cover really warped? I saw a few fairly warped ones when i was browsing for one the other day at junkyards. You sure your not missing a bolt somewhere down there?

Edit: beat to it again.

Hmmm. To add to the confusion, we got the tensioner off and its a 6-bolt tensioner. But my car was made in May 1992 so it should be 7-bolt.

If it isn't one thing it's another...

I'm going to assume its the cover and order a new one. Thanks :D

It may look fine, but your harmonic balancer is dead.

the 1g 6 and 7 bolt auto tensioners are different. Check your oil pan like brute mentioned to verify. You can also tell by your timing cover since you have it off.
Heres a link to buy a new one for 84$ and will show you differences.

MachV also sells them for 88$
