Hi,
If I was doing about 60 mph down the highway and my timing belt jumped some teeth and bent a valve would it be noticeable? I mean would I notice a bang?
Thanks

I dont see why it matters if you could hear it or not, you can feel the effects of it later. Try and start your car and if you hear the valves getting raped by the pistons you'll know.

Yes. If your timing jumped, you would know it. You would more than likely hear pistons and valves slapping each other and know it's going to cost quite a bit to fix it. You might not hear it if....you had the radio blasting, or some other loud noise, or just flat wasn't paying attention.

However, as stated, if you bent valves you would know it immediately as the car would instantly be running like crap, if it even runs at all.

No! Dont ever try to recrank the car after that. You could damage more. In other words valves or pistons that could have been saved. Normally if it was bad enough. The car will shut down.

If you know it jumped timing. Just go ahead and pull the head and check the damage.

I thought about that too. But if he's on the highway and made it home, I doubt he jumped timing at all. But if he did, then the damage will be done at the 2,500 rpm band that he was in at 60 mph instead of the 600 rpm at idle. While I havent done much valve work with a DSM, I did do some in my auto tech class and I dont think its that hard nor expensive. I think its like 190 bucks for performance valves. I dont know how hard it is to remove the bent rods tho.

Dont pull the head unless you have a spare head gasket.
