I just replaced the balance shaft belt and timing belt on my 92 talon. Along with that I installed a new tensioners and idler pulley. I followed vfaq instructions. Now, I left the top timing belt cover off and had someone watching as I tried to start the engine. it started and ran for a few seconds, but the timing belt started "walking" off the outer edge of the intake camshaft. So i shut it down immediatley. The good news is that I was blessed by the good lord to not have bent valves the engine sounded good and strong for the few seconds it was running. Sounded better than it did before the last timing belt shredded.
The guy that had it before me said the timing belt was probably off by half a tooth or maybe 1 tooth. and it seemed like it, the car didn't have the power it should have after
a rebuilt head and stuff. I Know i got the timing "dead on " now. anyway I need to know what would cause the timing belt to "walk" off the camshaft like that ? what should i do to fix it ? Please somebody help, I have a job interview coming up and need this car to be running.

Ok, So I didn't follow v faq instrustions all the way through. The timing belt kit I ordered from parts dinosaur came with instructions too. I started using them half way through the entire deal because my printer was out of ink and I got sick of going in and out of the house to read the vfaq instructions. in step 6 on the instructions that came with the timing belt kit it says lift tensioner pulley upward and the 2 pin holes must face down.
in step 28 on vfaq it says rotate tensioner pulley in a clockwise direction (making the 2 pin holes face upward) until belt is taught and tighten bolt. That being said in order to get the holes to face down you have to rotate the tensioner pulley counterclockwise. So the instructions that came with the belt say the 2 pin holes on the timing belt tensioner must face down, While the vfaq instructions say the 2 pin holes on the timing belt tensioner must face up. WTF ? I had it right the first time just going by what I remembered on setting the tensioner on my old 86 honda accord. But then I had to go and read the damn instructions that came with the timing belt. The moral to this is don't trust any timing belt instructions except vfaq.
