I recently just had my head rebuilt by a machine shop due to the timing belt stripping off teeth and bending the valves. The valves were replaced, as well as the guides and lifters with the 3g lifters.

Now, after starting it up and running it for a while there is still a constant tick that seems to come from the driver side of the engine, seemingly the head. I've primed the engine properly, as well as let it idle for around two hours. I put about 50 miles on the engine so far worth of driving since I had no other choice, and the ticking is not going away or showing any signs of getting quieter.

Any ideas?

Well, these cars ARE known to sometimes have that noise with nothing really being "wrong", so it's hard to say. Would be a good idea to find a DSM specialist to listen to it and find out if it sounds "normal" or "bad"...

Are you sure they didn't acidently put the old lifter back in? Also, sometimes it takes a little while for the lifters to lube up .

Try changing your oil too, I use Royal purp 20w50 and lucas full synthetic oil stabilizer. That made my lifter tick go away.

I might be mistaken but I thought 3g lifters were the revised ones?

my bad, i didnt finish reading the whole post... :boring: LOL and yeah, are you SURE you didnt put the old ones in again? the 3g's should not be ticking... unless you didnt lube them properly. $.02

SpiralOut... You USE lucas oil stabilizer? i here BAD BAD things about that crap...

i run mobil 1 synthetic 5w30 with OEM filter... no tick on either car...

I changed the oil three times since everything was back together to make sure there were no metal shavings (EDIT: Castrol GTX 10w40 for reference). I also added about 3/4 of a quart of the Lucas Oil Stabilizer, since I've heard good things, but it didn't help.

I guess I'm just going to give them more time, it's just really worrying me it's not going away. I've put together a couple motors and the ticking usually went away within about an hour or two of just idling.

The revised lifters were installed by a machine shop, I'd be a little mad if they put the old ones back in. On a side note, my old lifters barely ticked anyway, so I'd imagine even with the old lifters the ticking would have subsided by now.

I'm just waiting for this thing to blow up again, every time I fix something, something else goes wrong and ends up costing more money.

use 1 qt. of lucas oil stabalizer with your oil change and that tick should go away atleast for a little while...theres nothing bad about lucas oil its just really thick stuff to help lubricate
