So the engine is pretty much stock...but has a stage 4 unsprung clutch...if i shift at high rpms and pressing the throttle quick there is a thud in the rear end. I almost sounds like something is moving when the clutch engages

It says 2g in the title...its 98 gsx

2g still wasn't specific, besides you can't see the 1g/2g/thumb icon in the thread, so make sure you fill out your profile.

Check to see if your carrier busing are separating, I know the 1gs are more common, but yours are possibilities.

Fill out that profile yet?...:D

So i payed more attention to what is happing...the thud isnt really a thud sound...its more of a thud feel in the seat... I was thinking it could maybe a motor mount? but it feels like its coming more from the rear

So when your banging gears it kinda thuds under the seat. If you jab the throttle quick while moving along in gear, and immediately let off you'll feel a thud under your feet kinda if either the front of rear motor mount are bad.

Did you check to see if the motor mounts are ripped? If their original, and you bang gears, I bet the fronts blown out, and the rear is cracked/ripped. Common on older cars with some miles.

^ that describes it exactly! Thats what i was kinda thinking that it was the motor mounts...i was just kinda conserned that somthing was messed up in the rear end.

Chuck Norris lives under your seat...

Anyway, check your motor mounts. If they're separating, then that's your problem. Carrier could be separating as said above but unlikely.

No he definatley lives in mine. I launched my car and he kicked the seat and it ripped off one of the seat studs from the body, and cracked my seat rail leaving my attempting to stay in the front of the car. Damn him and his badassness.

OK I am a little confused you say the sound is in the rear end but are asking about clutch engagement. Is the noise coming from the clutch or the rear end?

If you know it is coming from the rear end, you're going to have to look at it.
Jack it up high enough to see the differential. I have had the front bolt on differential come lose and every time I jump on it or down shift and let the clutch out, it would clunk.

Of course it could also be drive shaft bushings worn out which are known to make clunking sounds. Do some searches for the fix.

### it happends only when I'm "banging" through gears...so when the clutch engages, and there is torque to the wheels again it happends...I think it is a engine mount as pointed out by sniver

The same thing happens to my car. When I engage the clutch and then drop it there is a thud like you described coming from the rear of the car. Someone told me that it was just the AWD but idk.

My car does the same thing. And I'm pretty sure it is the carrier bearing. As well as both of my struts are starting to go.

a 98 N/T GS has no carrier bearing (your profile says that is what you drive). Are you talking about another car?

As for carrier bearing thud: Banging through the gears won't bring it up, but getting hard on the gas will. I had the issue. I spend 200 for parts and rebuilt the whole thing in a few hours on a weekend.

Your rear differential mount bushings are probably worn. This is a common problem for 2G AWD cars. Raise the car and take a look at where the differential mounts to the rear subframe. You may need to place a pry bar between the differential and the subframe and pry gently to check for play.
