After ordering my coilovers, Im seriously thinking about boosting my 420a. I was thinking about buying a used motor with less miles, since my 420a has 116,000 miles right now. My car is my daily driver, so I would want to be safe. 116,000 miles + BOOST just do not mix in my book LOL. Since I plan on keeping the car for a little while, Im going to throw a new motor in...so it lasts a little longer. While im at it, I was thinking about playing with a little performance. If I were to go with my plan, What would be the maximum mileage for a safe turbo'd used 420a? Im not planning on going too crazy...maybe 5-6 psi on stock internals. Think Id be safe? Anyone else done this?

Thanks for the help,
Brian

You shouldn't focus so much on miles, instead focus on condition. Has maintinance been kept up on the engine? Oil changes been done on time? Has the engine been beat on or has it been babied? Do a compression check on the engine, if the numbers come back good(180-220 range) then you should be ok to boost. I have 92k miles on my boosted motor, and I know there are other guys with more. Just because you have 116k doesn't mean the engine is no good.

I boosted mine at 105k and am at 115k now with no problems, like said above its the condition of the engine not necessarily the mileage. However, be prepared at any time after boost to drop in another motor, either stock or built. If you can't afford to do that then don't bother. But since you're considering putting in a newer stock motor, IMO you might as well just boost the one you have and then if/when it blows while you still own the car you drop in another motor. There's no point in putting in an engine with 75k miles that may blow just as quickly to have to take it back out and put in a third or the original.

Chris said it well. Condition > Mileage.

If you've got the money, go ahead and pick up a spare motor. As you get money buy parts to build it. Trust me, once you boost, you will get used to the 5-6 PSI that you plan on running and will want more. Then you'll be happy you have that new motor to drop in, and with proper fuel support you can run 10-20 PSI.
