thick oil sludge?!?

i just replaced my oil return line gaskets and changed the oil. when i started the can and jacked it up to check to make sure no leaks, and i saw a prettty good steady drip/running of fluid. when it was on the ground in a puddle it was dark black and looks liek gear lube. couldnt get under car good enough to c where it was coming from. i know it is now motor oil cuz that is still full. where could it be coming from? transfer-case?

turns out to be the cv shaft is leakin from the tranny. that is 3 things i have had to fix since my mechanic put my motor in :thumbdown
