I found out about this logger the other day and found a OBD-II cable for 16 bucks. Now my question is, if i bought the serial connection to connect to this cable i could i have a logger for like 30 dollars? (i already got a sony clie pda).

Hey man, I'm new to this too, but from what I can tell, you will need a cable AND an interface. I too was looking for a cheaper cable or even DIY solution, but you have to have the ISO signal converted to serial with a little chip thingy for it to work. Multiplex Engineering has them for $82, basically it's an OBDII plug with the interface built in that has a female serial plug on the other side that plugs directly into the palm or laptop serial. here :
http://www.multiplex-engineering.com/products.htm it's the T16-003
The site you referenced also appears to have them, but you should find someone who has made it work before you buy it ;-)

OBD Guage is really nice, the display is big and clear, couple of things i don't like or maybe i don't know how to fully use, to clear the CEL you need to turn off the car, that's inconvinient, and then to see your logged run you need to export it to the OBD graph(this is all using palm). Has anyone gotten OBD gauge to work on their PC?? Explain, wheni try to open the program it says active link....

ive been using palm n stein on my 98 gsx and i jsut downloaded the obd gauge to my palm 100 it comes up but it just says initializing at the top and never does anything. how did you guys get it to work for you?

tap the top of the screen, go to properties or preferences, and fiddle with the interface connection prefs. I have the multiplex t16-003 and i used "multiplex" and "iso" and that suddenly worked.

I got the OBD gauge player (to analyze palm .pdb files) to work on PC, haven't tried the logging software (don't have a lap top).

ive tried changing the settings and nothing works yet. anybody switch from palmnstein and get it to work what are your settings? do you click on connect with cable to start logging ?

I am very interested in this obd gauge but I dont have the hotsync software(palm m100)...does anyone know where I can get this software from or have some way of giving it to me?
Thanks

If you go to the Classifieds right here on DSM tuners and search for palm or datalogger you will find someone that has a little business with these things, they sell the Palm pilot m100 and the software along with the cable for the car. Check it out.

where do you think I got a datalogging cable palm m100 and no hotsync software....

I have everything I need, but hotsync software and when I get that I can DL the obd gauge...

I'm assuming you're looking for the desktop software you can use to sync the palm and download stuff onto it? Hope it works for you - and don't forget to go under "options" and "preferences" and change interface to "multiplex" and under "setup" change protocol to ISO. Otherwise you will just see "initializing" and no graphs

thanks alot, Im downloading it now we will see how it goes....

The only drawback i think it has it's that you cna't view your logs right there on the palm, you need to transfer it to the PC.

not that i've seen.

side note, it pisses me off that I can't view my logs, kinda defeats the purpose of logging. anyone have to download the framenet or whatever it is from microsoft update in order to run OBD graph?

Yeah you go to that link the "read me" gives you, the program is .NET Framework, you download it, install it and you could view the files, pretty neat. Still it's annoying that you can't view them on the PDA but only on the computer.

Just had some time to put an old-skewl SAFC into my Evo this weekend, and so I recorded timing advance curves with both loggers during my runs. Yeah, I agree with the above posts, it sucks that you can't see the exact data points for those all-important 15-20 captures that make up your 3rd gear 2500-redline pull with OBD gauge. I did have luck downloading the captures to my desktop computer, and also graphing them out in excel, which is great for record keeping. You will need the aforementioned "netframework" update for XP. But when you are in your car, making adjustments on the fly between pulls, I don't think OBD gauge can cut it. Palm-n-stein at least you can pause the graph in playback and then step through point by point and see your data in numerical form.
I'm loving the SAFC though, even with my conservative base settings this thing just rips in the upper 2000 rpm now. Can't wait to really tune it!

I just purchased a m105 with hot sync cable for my 2g. I downloaded the OBD Gauge 1.9 from the site below along with Source Code and Palm OS Developer Suite

http://www.qcontinuum.org/obdgauge/

I changed the interface to multiplex and the protocol to ISO and it still says initalizing and will not do anything else. Anything that I am forgetting, I could not find another thread on obdgauge.

Thanks

You do have the multiplex engineering interface I assume. If so, you have those two options set correctly, make sure your connections are tight, and try changing the baud and other options, just make sure its set for Multiplex - ISO. That should do it for you. Play with it a little and it will work.

I am not sure if I have the multiplex engineering interface since multiplex engineering is just a company.

http://www.multiplex-engineering.com/products.htm

I do have a cable that changes the obdII to a serial and then a null adapter and my hot sync cable.

Under setup it will ask for a baud, address and protocol. What is the correct address, there are alot to choose from. The default was 25 I think, but I have been trying many others. What are others using with an m105?

I dont see how that is different from the cable that I am using but the cable may be the problem.

What address is yours using and does it work still if you change it?

The address is whatever the default was when the program was installed, I cant check it now because I dont have my palm with me. But look at that page again and notice that the cable is only $24 and the interface is about 70 or 80 due to the fact that the interface actually has a small board in it and is able to read the obdII info whereas the cable cannot do that.

wonder if this cable and interface will work with Palm n stein and obd guage? Seems to have all the necessary interface for obd-2 reading but for $24 almost seems too good to be true. But they use it in a very similar way, programs are from another developer but mayby those programs listed will work with our DSMs too. Just adding more knowledge to the soup.

It will not work, our cars use the ISO protocol, VW's and Audis use what I think is called VAG(might be wrong on that). The software and interface are designed for that protocol.
