Alright, as many know of my run-in with Jiffy Lube, I will soon have my vehicle back on the road after over a month.
TheDSMGraveyard was not quite what I had hoped for in terms of ensuring a simple swap. I ordered the head and block assembly separate so that I wouldn't have to pay as much for shipping and I could replace any components as necessary (head gasket, internal gaskets, timing components).
Head:
The head seemed to be in fairly good condition. The packaging was less than desirable with pieces of cardboard left in various places that were cut into the recesses. One of the head-to-block pins was left in the head and took a bit of work to remove, but otherwise wasn't bad. The old gasket material was all over the place.
The head had several bolts broken off inside: two fuel rail bolts and on exhaust manifold stud. All but one exhaust manifold stud was removed, so I ordered others. Then when I tried to install the 10mm sides, I realized that they sent me an early 1g head with all 8mm studs. The head appears to have been a rebuilt head with very little wear but had been then touched by someone who didn't know what they were doing and broke off a bunch of things while trying to work on it themselves.
Block:
The block was in decent shape, but had a great deal of oil on one side. The other side showed signs of rust, as well as slight rust on the inside of the cylinders. The balance shafts were already removed
but the bearings were still in there. The gasket material from the front case and head gasket was a PITA to remove and with so much grime around the outside it made it quite the task to prep for the install.
Overall, I do not know that I would try thedsmgraveyard again without verifying exactly which items I would be getting. If this were for a complete rework and getting it all hot-tanked then it would be a great deal; otherwise it's too much work to assume it as a quick swap.
