the oil leak....

ive done alot of reading since i bought my dsm and a oil leak in a 98 seems pretty common, but it everyone seems to of tryed to replace a ton of parts and never post wich one it actually was.


ii know any part could potentially leak , but what is it useually in this year?

I don't think the 98 leaks oil any more than any other year. The main points to check are where the feed line goes into the turbo and both connections on the return line.

Yup, mine are leaking... but thats because my whole line bent and broke and i have a temperory fix with tranny psi line. And even with a new gasket and some rtv it leaks at the return a bit. Ugh its a pain, take your time with it though (unfortunately i had to rush to get my car done when i did the turbo swap...its my dd and then it got 2 cold here in Michigan.)

If it's NOT leaking oil, then you have to worry .
Anyway, it just depends. I've had a bad relief valve O-ring that leaked.
I've had the turbo oil return line leak.

Other parts that can leak oil are:
Oil pan
Rear main seal
Oil pressure switch
Oil pressure sending unit
Turbo oil feed line (at turbo and/or at filter housing)
Oil drain plug (such as a bad O-ring on plug)
Any other bad gaskets/O-rings that are oil related

Oil leaks are usually easy to fix. Just take your time when replacing a bad gasket. Be sure to scrape off all of the old gasket, and make sure both mating surfaces are flat and clean.

And, to be extra safe, I've always used thread sealant (not teflon tape) on known parts that leak oil. Such as oil pressure switch, sending unit, oil feed line. It's a few bucks at the parts store. Isn't affected by oil, works in high temps, and gives you that extra sense of security.

Does your oil light flicker on and off? Mines does this or its on but dim. I have yet to check out what the porblem is.
