3 1/2 in cat back system? Jeeesus.

The mods alone validate the pricetag but expect to spend a cool 1k on a good transmission

And there's got to be something else wrong at that price.

6/4?

it comes from a friend leaving for the army... so he dont need it haha... and what u meen 6\4?

six bolt engine 4 bolt rear end?

And I assume you meant 2 1/2 in exhaust? I've never heard of 3 1/2.

If he's only asking $1000 for it, I'd say there is something else wrong with the car other than the tranny issue. But you can check the local salvage yard for a used transmission. The one around where I live has a ton of DSMs that I get my parts off of for cheap. But seriously ask the car questions about the car to see if anything else is wrong.

If you plan to by a DSM, be prepared to spend more than just $1k. It will need a transmission at best. Once you fix that, it will need something else. DSMs just eat away at your wallet. I just wanted ot make sure that you were buying a money pit:p

Be sure to check it out good, you don't want to believe it only needs a trans and then find out it needs much more, as said these cars can get expensive quick...

well buddy haha got around 7grand stuck in my cummins turbo diesel engine so far... soon to hit around 600horse and 1300torque haha. so i know what it like to buy a vehicle that just likes to spend your money

When I first got mine I had no idea the hard work I would soon be putting into it. After a month of having it, the timing belt snapped and had to rebuild the head and replace all of the motor mounts. Lots and lots of money goes into these cars.

I bought mine from a 65 year old man. One owner car with under 70,000 miles, within a month I had put a $1000 into it.

When I first drove down to Georgia ( Where I live now) I let my cousin drive it right down the road, and somehow he burnt out the clutch by driving 100 yards. So ended up paying 1400 for stage 2 clutch and installation.

Clutch was the first thing I had to do on mine also, apparently the old guy's hip was going out!LOLLOL

That's a really good price as long as you are willing to put another about 1k into it. I would definately jump on it

thanks for the input guys! i am going to talk to the guy. if i can get it for 500 i an going to get it fix it and sell it. again thanks for the responses

I have posted about this before but I feel this would be a good place to let people know just how much of a gamble it is to buy a used car.

My DSM was purchased from the original owner. It was completely stock. Took it for a "pre-purchase" inspection and everything checked out nice. CARFAX was clean. Garaged all its life.

Onto the bad news. Took the car to FFtec for a "DSM inspection". Compression was at 130 on one of the cylinders. Can't mod with a number like that. Turned out to be a bad valve. Valve job worked out to be 2700 dollars. I paid 8500k for it to begin with. Granted now I have a almost completely rebuilt engine but still...it hurt my pockets. Add to that...there was evidence that it had been hit bad to the point where there was frame damage yet it had been fixed without reporting to insurance to maintain a nice clean report on the car.

Lesson? Well, if I were to do it all over again, I would have the car FULLY inspected. Have a shop check the compression and get the car lifted to check for evidence of frame damage.

On another note - A lot of people claim to have a salvage title but only due to theft and not to damage. What is the general consensus on that? I would do it on an older car like ours. Hell, our KBB is $5,085 for a mint condition used GSX. Won't take much of an accident to total it out.

wow i must of got a great deal, im a mechanic and got traded a decent 91 tsi with a clutch problem that runs great. body is in decent shape with no dents but sun fade. i recently ripped the motor and tranny out and posted pics. Is there anything i can read on here that can point me in the right direction as to where to start with my project. This is my very first turbo car and dont know to much about turbos. I also would like to know how i can find out what turbo is in it. thanks

How much for the car that make a big difference on if it is worth it or not.

Edit: Sorry I missed that part. Sounds like a good car. But I have seen some 95-96 automatic awd's on the clasiffieds for under $2000
