The Official "What Should I Spend Money On?" Thread [Merged 10-6]

Got the word from the Mitsubishi dealer today that the ills of my car are cause by a bad clutch. "Needs complete clutch kit to repair" is what the service statement reads. I was quoted $820 for everything (labor too). But that was with a stock clutch that they had to order and it wouldn't make it in until the week-end (Todays Tuesday). I told them since I could still drive it that I would get an aftermarket and get back with them. Here lies the dilema. I have a 2G GSX with 104,000 miles on it get on it once and a while. I have dragged it once but that is all I needed. Daily driver. K & N Filter other than that she is stock. What clutch should I get? I have read and heard some that the ACT 2100 is the deal and it runs about $325. On the other hand Quoted from extreme motorsports. "the Clutch Masters HDSB2500 is the best overall, because it applies less pressure to the thrust bearing, thus decreasing the chance of crank walk." This is $400. I got a 2G, not a crankwalker and basically stock. Which do I get?
Want to keep the price reasonable. Also anything else I need? I know the two come with throwout bearings but anything else that the dealer wouldn't have?

Let me know of your clutch upgrades.

L8r,
Howie

If you don't plan on modding your car anymore, I'd for sure get a stock clutch. The quote seems pretty high though, but expected from a dealer, especially when you factor in the full retail price of a 'mitsubishi' clutch kit, which is probably a lot.

I don't know...the ClutchMaster may be the way to go if it will hold up to some power. It could be a little preventive mant. to avoid crankwalk. What's the saying...Pay a little more now, or alot later. I'm building my motor next year and I'm doing all the research now to get maximum power (trying for 12's in street condition) and doing everything I can to reduce the chance of the "Walker" coming after me.

I know a three people that have had some very good experiences with the LUK clutch kit. It comes with the pressure plate, disk, throw-out bearing and alignment tool. You can get them at Pep Boys for $130. They have been used in an NT, GST, and a GSX that ran 12.3's without issues.

As for install, expect about $400 for a 2g GSX. Otherwise find some friends and do it yourself for $50 (fluid and flywheel resurfacing). Takes about 6 hours for a novice...to 3 hours for a pro.

AWDriven.

Thanks for all the info. I appreciate it. Still open for any other suggestions. These have been great so far. I too don't want my crank walked on. He He. So what I think so far is I get the clutch and throw out bearing and that is all I need? I found a braided stainless clutch line for the 2g on extreme motorsports for $20. I think that might be something else to do to make it better.

Thoughts?

I have the two pipe exhaust that came stock, could I just get the inside of that hollowed out? would that do anything, what do you guys think? As far as aftermarket parts, does anyone have their work guaranteed, cause that's why shops around here don't seem willing to work on my car, for ex; exhaust, UR underdrive pulley.

A FELLOW NT GUY MYSELF I HAVE A 94 EAGLE NT AND THE CAR IS A NICE. I WOULD RUN A K&N FILTER AND CUT THE CAN (INSTRUCTIONS ON THE WEB JUST DO A SEARCH). THEN LOOK UP WWW.TESTPIPE.COM FOR $45 YOU CAN GET RIDE OF THE CAT (GOOD FOR 5-15 HP). LATER WHEN YOU HAVE MONEY FIND A SMASHED TURBO CAR AND SWAP PARTS. THATS WHAT I'AM DOING FOR A WINTER PROJECT. GOOD LUCK

As for exhaust and such, all turbo exhausts will fit the NT's, just find a 2.5in not a 3in, the NT's need backbressure unlike the turbo's. I myself have a set of intake'exhaust cams sitting here i want to put on. i hear they free a few hp's but anyways. pacesetter ceramic headers are decent and add some hp's. try 450cc injectors and a new fuel pump, underdrive pulleys, there are lots of little things you can do to get 200 hp on a NT.

hey i have a question i am looking for some parts for my 90 eagle talon tsi fwd but i have a few in mind i want to get the aero werkz blitz body kit-$1,300 and a gt-2 wing-$200-250 and a paint job-($1,500 or more) if u could help me figure out about how much that would cost and to spend $5,000 in all i would also like to get the (katana tezza rims for like 1,000) and a full cat back exhaust so if u have any other suggestions plz help me thanks

David......................................:dsm: 's forever

if any one would like to sell any thing they have (that would fit a 90 eagle talon) i would apericate it if u would contact me via email.......thanks

personally I would go with a full exhaust and have the engine rebuilt to a performance stage...then go for the paint job...

Get a K&N and remove the airbox first, then get a 3" turbo-back, Boost guage and EGT or AF guage, Full Hard IC piping and a FMIC from Dejon Tool, Boost controller, Port- polish and get a 5 angle valve job on the head and port match the manifolds, 550CC injectors and a S-AFC, get an act 2100 or 2600 clutch and a lightweight flywheel. If you have any $ left after that then get a Body kit and the car painted. Well, that's what I'd do if I had a 1G and $5k... Hope that helps! :D

L8R! :dsm:

It looks like you're going more for show than go, from all the things you thought you wanted to spend your money on. With that kind of money, and a 1g, I would definitely go all out on the engine. :D If you wanted to make your car look badass, hey, nothin' against it, go for it. But you could probably do more with that on a 2g.

LOL:rolleyes:

Make sure you read up a lot on the products you are going to buy. What is a fuel managment system? If you mean an afc than that only like 300$ new. What about fuel pump, why you need cam gears, a t3 or 16g definetly wont cost 1700$, why you wanna intake manifold and why a timing advance kit, dont need a 150$ kit to advance timing as it should be done with you engin mangment system or not really at all. Just make sure you know what your getting when you get it. Im not trying to steer you away from anything, but there are just too many peopl nowadays with these cars that others can learn from, for what works and what dont. Good luck

yea well the fuel management system is a venom thing that changes ur fuel setting a stuff on the go and the enginel managment system is 1,300 b/c u can plug in a lap top and change all ur setting on ur lap top so yea i will be cheaking in to all this stuff i have been for the past 4 or 5 month but thanks.....David

Not trying to criticize you, just help:
-For $1300 you can get the AEM EMS (wayyy better than Venom), which will eliminate the fuel management kit ($400), advance timing kit ($150), and upgrade computer chip ($300).
-Spark plugs will NOT cost you $150, more like $15 and Plug wires will NOT cost you $200, more like $80.
-A T3/T4 turbo or a Big 16g will not cost you $1700. Closer to $1300 if that. Also, you shouldn't need an aftermarket exhaust manifold ($300).
-Cam gears ($300) and underdrive pulleys ($300) are probably going to be a waste of your money.
Those are just a couple of quick thoughts. You could easily trim $2,000 to $3,000 off of your list and still fly. Just my opinion though. You may want to look up some of the "go-fast" recipes that RRE, MachV, etc. publish on their websites.

Cam gears ($300) and underdrive pulleys ($300) are probably going to be a waste of your money.

I'm with you on the cam gears being a waste, but underdrive pulleys DO add power due to reduced paralistic drag... I've got a underdrive crank pulley and noticed a difference in power and slightly quicker spool after installing it, L2RTSiAWD has a full pulley set and noticed a big difference after installing them! About the Venom system... Venom spends too much of their time making things look good instead of making them work right! There are many turbo's out there that are a LOT less expensive than $1700 and preform extremely well! You should check out AGP Turbo They make some SWEET ball bearing turbos!!! :thumb:
