so this morning i was driving and the dash temp gaugehad gone normal to super hot within a minute...

i drive slowly and see nothing is happening...car is driving normal and such. after a little bit, it goes back to normal and again back to super hot...

i get home chill and drive for work...and its reading super hot before i even crank it.. (there was a 2hr period when i drove again) i drive to work and it drives fine just "super hot"...

i leave from work and its hot within 10 secs... so i figure it must be the thermostat? i dont see how the motor could have heated up from cold (8hrs of sitting ) to super hot in a matter of seconds... then to normal for a little bit and back up..

needle doesnt creep...it jumps...

new thermostat needed?

If your needle is fluctuating abnormally, and you are cleary not over heating,it's possible the water temp sensor is bad,or you have two wires shorting out. Also check your connection at the sender, and follow it down.
