Just curious cause im lookin into a GST/X soon and i was wondering if the WRX (not sti) is faster than the Eclipse.

Stock for stock the WRX is a tad faster. About 17 more hp and a little lighter. Both cars have great potential and bad transmissions.

How true it is. Luckily, we have Shep and TRE for good rebuilds, while they have a 6-speed STi swap that costs close to $5K.

A friend was looking HEAVILY into WRXs and STis, and could not find an inexpensive but solid rebuild for the WRX trans. The 4G63 engine can also handle about 100HP more on stock internals than an EJ20T.

well i dont think i was planning on throwing away loads of cash on a GST/X like i did for RS i just want a turbo car maybe do BOV make it sound pretty and a new 14b or whatever turbo is in it. Im done spending money on expensive pistons and turbo's for a non turbo veichele. I want to have money for myself thats basically why im getting rid of the RS and just getting a meant to be turbo car.

Raced a WRX this weekend. In my GST. Rolling start, minor mods on my car, as are mentioned in vehicle profile. Didn't smoke him, but by the time we were up to 120, I was about a car length in front of him. Then we hit traffic, and had to call it off. :( What was funny, was when we got to the light at one point, and the passenger leaned out the window to ask if I had a GST. I guess maybe he thought I had an RS/GS and just shaved off the badge like almost all the other RS/GS's in the area.... Or maybe he was hoping he lost to at least a GSX. Oh well.... :p Probably bad shifting on his behalf....since he should have beaten me. Add in my auto tranny, and I just don't know what went wrong for him, haha.
I've got friends with both DSMs and WRXs. A lot of it is going to be depend on exactly what type of driving you're going to do. I personally like the look of a 2g eclipse over a scooby any day, but I wouldn't turn away from getting one either. As for price tag....dsm's all the way. :D

Where are these "shep and tre" located at? Cost? website? Contact info? How much power can the 5spd take after the rebuild by them?

They offer different rebuilds. You can get whatever rebuild would apply to you. You can get all they way up to a dogbox that will take whatever you can throw at it, but isn't a tranny you'd want to use on the streets.

Info can be found at www.shepracing.com www.teamrip.com

As for you choice in which car, I'd go with an Eclipse over a WRX. They have weaker trannies then ours, the price tag is a little higher on em, and personally I think the layout of our engines is just much simpler and easier to make your own parts for. Plus I think Eclipses look better too!!

WRX and the STi have some downfalls. Unlike the Evo 8 it doesn't take to modding well. Stock they are some great cars, but put some power to em and watch the tranny blow. Not to mention the hardware on those cars easily break. Putting on an exhaust on my cousins, and every bolt broke except one. I hate when that happens. Turns a 15 minute job into an hour. The dsm vs a wrx is pretty close, but w/ some free mods, better bov, and some tricks...the dsm takes the cake.

The 2G transmission isn't half bad but the 1G tranny................. :(

Looking in Motortrend, Road and track, Car and Driver 1/4 mi. times are between 14.2 and 14.5 and stock boost is 14 lbs. on the WRX.

The 1/4 mi. times I've seen in these same magazines for our cars varried between 14.9 and 15.1

So the edge there is with the WRX. What's interesting with these 2 cars is that when you free mod our cars and boost to that same 14 lbs the 1/4 mi times become virtually identical. Not too surprising though because they're both using 2.0 engines and they're very similar in weight.

The new WRX has 3 cat converters and a dp that are all very restrictive so I imagine with only some custom pipes you could get into the 13's fairly easy without having to boost higher or do other stuff.

One advantage of the WRX is you'd have a warrenty.
Personally, I'm waiting for Subaru to offer a FWD 5-spd A/T version LOL

only thing good about WRX flat 4 engine design is the way they sound, All u need to do is put an exhaust on them and u'll make a v8 guy piss his pants when he tries to rev on u and show off. They sound so ####ing sweet, but the downsides of them are way too many just for good sound. Bad trannies, ugly looks, expensive as hell, hard to fix up, blah blah blah dsms are just more fun in my opinion.

yeah i just bearly raced a WRX too, beat it pretty good..was a rolling start and i kep lettin him roll up on me then i just downshifted and passed him... i wasnt too impressed considering im only running 8psi right now

probably meant he wasn't racing

The WRX is by far a better car... period.

when modding them, the dsm has been out longer, MANY more products, and cars out there, which gives the edge to them, if you're going to modify it. if you're not, the wrx is the clear choice, until you factor price in.

can't really compare considering the price difference bbetween the wrx and even a 99 GSX. the fit and finish all around is better on a wrx, you can actually seat 4 adults comfortably, you'll have a warrenty, you'll have a company that stands behind they're warranties ;) and its newer with other engineering advances, in things from suspension to almost everything else.

and you can make it to about 280 awhp without too much trouble. past that, the pioneers are still working. which will eventually mean similar outputs as current DSMs.

he said he was sick of modify cars basically, so he should go with the WRX. I've driven a 1g gsx, a 2g gsx, and a WRX wagon... no comparison, the wrx is faster, feels better, shifts better, is a overall MUCH better car... for more money

i agree....if you have the money...and plan on leaving it stock, buy the subaru. In my opinion, the dsm is a better looking car.....but that wouldn't be enough to sway my choice if price wasn't a factor.

Untrue.Sti's have damn near bulletproof trannies. The WRX guys that have money upgrade to those :)

STI guys are having trouble like the regular wrx guys. Check out the scooby forums for more info.

My cuzin has a wrx. Personally i love my interior and exterior a million times more then a wrx. And our motors are more potent. What else can you ask for?

I have a 97 gst (K & N Filter and BOV) and i have beaten 3 wrx's from a roll. I've talked to each of them afterwards and they all said they had good shifts and didn't mess anything up....

My friend has an '05 STI and I raced him once. It wasn't pretty. I let him get about 4-5 car leangths out on me and then I hit the throttle. He said I passed him so fast that he had to look down at his gauges to see if his car was still on. No joke, these are his ouwn words. :p
