I've been tapping into my ciggarette lighter for power . Currently I have 2 small cpu size fans, my boost guage, my radar detector, and my A/f guage tapped into it. Is this too much? Should I be worried about frying something? I was hoping to also add 3-4 switches to it also but I don't want to overkill it.. I need everything to run when i turn on the key, which is why i didnt run it straight from the battery. Any suggestions?

Thats a shit load of stuff!!!! But the most dammage it will do is blow the 15 cent fuse :thumb: . But as far as the switches run them straight to the battery since they are (switches).

I would definately stop, and maybe take those fans off there... not a big fan of having the potential to Blow the fuse... after all you bought the guages so you could monitor them.

Switches for what? Even switches need to have a fuse, fusable link, or relay on them or you risk burning up your wiring should a short occur. If it's for power, use the appropriate wire size and fuse for the max current you want to allow.

I would stop there - why? What are the fans cooling? Hook the guages straight off the fuse block, there should be an accessory spot to plug them into, run a wire from your battery with a 30 amp fuse in it to hook up your switches (which are going to switch what on/off?) if the switches are just hitting relays you'd be better off, and wouldn't have to worry about power draw there... what exactly are you doing?

The fans are running to my trunk to cool my amp and to add blue lcd light ups to my plexiglassed sound system. The switches will control my Cryo2 system (On/Off Switch, Purge Button, Pre-Cooling Button) Ya ill just run those from the battery in the front.

As for the fans each one takes 4.8W to run it. Then the 2 guages which also glow. Everybody thinks this is alot so I guess I will be rewiring today.. Ill see if i can locate that accessory plugin, or .... is there anyplace to tap into under the console? Yes, of course im going to fuse it all :)

u may have a plug under the drivers seat with nothing on it ( for power seats )
and also there may be a plug under the pass seat ( for a stock amp )
those are 2 ok alternitive sources for power.

Dave, the plugs under the seats? Is that just a 2g thing for the power seats? I have been planning on a power port for a laptop and MP3 player, in my 1g and was afraid that the stock cig lighter wouldn't cut it for power.

Thanks

Why not run a new fused circuit? You can use your cigaratte lighter power wire to turn on a relay for that circuit if you want it to only work with ignition on. You just need to figure out how much current you will be drawing off that circuit so you can use an oppropriatly gauged wire and rated fuse.

I thought that hookup under the seat hooks to the seatbelt and turns on/off the idiot seatbelt light on your guage cluster when u plug into ur belt.
