I had these posted on the dead DSMTalk. I thought I would repost for some who missed it. We built the car over last winter and spring, tuning debugging over late summer and fall. Now it is in storage until spring. We plan on running open track events and hillclimbs.
Questions/comments welcome.

Looks way to nice to be a race car. :thumb:

But by next year I bet that will change.

I'm jealous! :thumb:

You need to resize your pics though :p

Very nice.

Fixed your pics so they are linked since they were a tad to big.

Thank you all for the nice comments. The cage stiffened things quite a bit, we also put in urethane bushings all around, and custom aluminum sub-frame bushings (front and rear). The JIC suspension seems to work well with the chassis improvements. It feels like a go cart :)

I don't know how much it weighs, definitely lighter than stock. It will be scaled in spring to adjust the corner weights, I'll post the results. Not much went back into the car after the cage work.

When we first got the car done, we put the stock t-25 on the six bolt race motor to break it in. It was silly.

I'm curious, how long did all that seam welding take?

I've entertained the idea of doing it to my car, but it will have to wait until I have something else to drive as well :p

I am glad you brought the pics and stuff over to this board as well. I would like to watch and see how you do with this project.

Come on spring!

"why seam weld everything? what gain would that have?"

This is a fundamental step in building a race car (especially for rally and hillclimb). The unibody is simply not meant to handle the stresses that will be placed on it by the improvements made in the suspension. It would be a waste of money to put nice suspension on a floppy chassis. Seam welding also will help the chassis take the abuse of competitive driving; we built this as a platform to use for the next few years.

"why didn't you go with a tubular subframe?"

There are two subframes on the car, not sure the point of trying to make those tubular? If you mean why didn't we build a tube chassis car and hang the body on it, many of the races we would like to compete in do not allow full tube chassis construction...it still has to be a car :)

"if this is an all out "race" car ... why even bother putting in a passenger seat??? Other than that looks nice.

We put a passenger seat in because it is necessary to have a co-driver for some of the events we would like to compete in, besides, you have to have a seat to give the hot chicks a ride in :)

"no engine pics?"

Here is the only one I have, its a fully built six-bolt (all forged components, headwork, etc...). We expect the horsepower in full race trim to be around 450-500, I'll post dyno results when it goes for tuning. The picture is right after we got the motor in the car (look ma no fenders :)

That is going to be FUN to drive. I'm very jealous, keep up the good work :thumb:

looks slick, i envy you so much, i love to race. drag get outta here im a Road Racin kinda guy. Any thing with hills, turns the stuff that makes your six point harness pinch your nuts :thumb: I used to have a GST that was built for racing. Not as serious as your car but it was along the same line. but I have a kid on the way, my gf is ganna pop any day i give it 3 weeks at the most. :thumb: You guys are ganna have to get some pics of it at the track. i would love to see that. and i love them engine bay pics :D

sorry, shoulda been more specific. i was talking about the front subframe. forgot which company makes a chromoly tubular front s/f for us, but that or tubular control arms with some poly bushings would def. be worth looking into(if you havent already). im not talking about a tube chassis or anything like that. il see if i can find a picture of what im talkin about.

anyways, for beginner fabricators and project-goers this is really an inspiration. keep us all posted. and :thumb: for the impressive work.

I'm not sure that you would gain anything by making them tubular except possibly shedding a pound (nice because it's unsprung weight). While doing tech inspection at STPR (big national ProRally) I saw a 1G with custom tubular arms on the front. He made them because he didn't like working with crappy used factory ones, I'm not sure they gave him any benefit other than being clean and tidy. Also, if you make all of the components in the system super strong you'll break big. I would rather bend a suspension arm then bend the corner of the car.

The rear brake ducts are a pretty clever idea.

Now all you need is a front air dam :)

Very nice. I like it a lot. Makes me want to go get a MIG/TIG welder... Along with a daily driver!
