A buddy whos big into imports has a talon turbo awd. I don't know much about it other than he said something about 6 bolt and 4 bolt... axles maybe? It's a 92 if that helps.

Basically he said with a turbo upgrade and some other small things it would be an 11 second car. He's kind of a distant friend but he really knows his stuff. I'm more of a ls1 kind of guy but if what he says is true then I'm considering buying his talon. He was saying you could get most of the parts for around 1500 minus any tuning. Are these numbers bogus or is this a feasible thing?

Sorry for the lack of technical terms. I'll be upfront and honest and admit I do not know anything about these cars.

Thanks in advance,

Kyle

The car he has is one of the more sought after cars in the DSM world. He had the 6 bolt motor which is far less prone to crankwalk than the 7 bolt. The 4 bolt is the rear end, it is much stronger with beefier axles than the 3 bolt with LSD in earlier years. It is the most wanted 1G because it is the only one with this combination. The 93 and 94 had a 7 bolt with the 4 bolt rears.

I wouldn't say under $1500 to be in the 11's but I would say under about 4-5k. A good turbo will run you $800. Good fuel support will run you around $700. I have seen it done with stock motors but your best bet is to get it rebuilt with a nice rod/piston combo and some Brian Crower cams 272/272. Then you have your tuning which will run you around $1300 or so with dsmlink and all the necessary gauges. You also have all your small odds and ends that do add up. Such as, Intercooler, piping, intake, exhaust, oil lines, etc. Its like this for any car but with proper know how you can make a 11-12 second car fairly cheap and reliable.

He was talking about a 6bolt motor, which handles boost better.
The 4 bolt. I have no idea what he meant.
But it could be feasible for that cheap, but I wouldn't want to cut corners that way, remember
Speed, Reliability, Cheap
Pick 2.

The 6 bolt does not handle boost better. I have seen old ladies on stock boost run into crankwalk problems. That is the main reason that people go with a 6 bolt instead of a 7 bolt. The only major difference between the two are the 2g pistons are better and the 1g rods are bigger. I have seen plenty of stock 7 bolts in the 11's and some in the 10's. There is a stock 7 bolt evo by me in the low 10's even though they are a little different than the DSM 7 bolt its just one I have personally witnessed.

No, you sir, are wrong.
It can handle more boost.
This is straight out of Wikipedia.
The "6-bolt" engine on all Talons built before April 1992 refers to the number of bolts connecting the flywheel to the crankshaft. All 1G Talons built after April 1992.5 received a freer revving "7-bolt" engine borrowed from the 1992 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution's lighter rods and 7-bolt crankshaft. The 6-bolt engines are prized for their impressive ability to withstand large amounts of boost due to the more robust combination of connecting rods and crankshaft. 25-30 PSI is not uncommon, and 6-bolt engines have been known to handle 500+ hp using the stock internals. The 1G "7-bolt" engines suffer from crankwalk no more than the 1G "6-bolt" engines. The majority of crankwalk cases that affected many "7-bolt" turbo Talon engines were found later in the revised 2G "7-bolt" motors found in 1995-1997 model year Talons.

thats because, you sir, are fwd:thumb:

budget build and it could be done...its all about who you know and what kind of hook-ups you can aquire.

It takes more than 1500 to get a dsm into the 11's. My buddy has a red 92 talon awd and it runs 11.67 at 119.87 with stock 6bolt and the head only has cams and a very good tune, for turbo hes running a evoIII big 16g with big front mount and the right fuel system. but he spent more then 1500 to get it there maybe around 4-5 g's
