Is it possible?

How much do they cost, and would it be worth it if I don't plan on upgrading my turbo for a while?

Would I need to buy anything else with them, like IC pipes?

-I couldn't find that page for the 1G any more, the installation is pretty similar.

I am getting a SSMIC this weekend, and kinda want to mount it up front as opposed to on the side. I am assuming it will help a little and it wont block the whole radiator also, like a true front mount. I am wondering if anyone has done this and if it has to be mounted a certain direction to function at its best, or does it not matter. Where ever I decide to mount it I am just going to order bends and couplers and some straight pipe and make my own piping kit trying to keep it as short as possible. My main concern is how to mount it like the end tank at the top and bottom or on the sides and is there a certain side that needs to face the front or rear of my car. Thanks Corey...

Sounds like a good idea, but it won't fill the front opening as a true FMIC would. I guess function over form is better, right?

I don't think it matters how you position it, as long as one side is facing forward and air can flow through it easily.

I was thinking maybe welding TWO MKIV SMIC together and making new endtanks, as the stock endtanks are known to "lift" under heavy boost (hence the bands).

Yeah I have heard of installing custom metal endtanks on it when you really start to push its limits(what are the limits it sees 320 hp factory out of a supra and BPU supras put out well over 400 at it and at least 17-20lbs of boost I would assume..anyone?) , but I have no idea where to get this done or how to do it(the metal endtanks).as I prefer to do everything myself. I might have it done this weekend or at least mounted. My front bumper support is trashed because the previous owner wrecked the car and didnt replace it just screwed it back together so I am going to "modify it to fit the Supra core in the front somehow. I will have a friend use his Dig. cam when I am finished as I might be one of the first to front mount this Ic. To aid others if they attempt it, if you know of anyone who has done this let me know how it went. Later Corey

I would love to see two Supra or other upgraded ICs used - one on each side - for the ultimate sleeper.
They are dark in color, right? The Audi TT with 225hp has two side mount ICs so I know it is workable from a thermodynamics point of view.

I should be making mine for my 2G as soon as I get everything ordered and go junkyard hunting, as I was going to do dual stock SMICs....damn school takes up too much time though!

I actually have a custom supra sidemount. It's got aluminum endtanks welded on them for better flow. It looks bad ass , I'll get some pics of it up soon. Really something to consider if you want the stealthiness factor..

Yeah my Supra sidemount is just sitting in my garage, I need to buy some couplers and some sort of UICP to install it(but nothings open on saturday). I have decided now that I have it that I am just gonna mount it where the factory IC is and not front mount it, it would be far too much work. I might have to wait to install it depending on how much I am gonna have to spend on the install parts. Later Corey
edit-I will post pics of mine when its done also, I bought mine from a friend(he got it from a friend of his that works on turbo supras, single turbo kits,etc..) for 150.00$, it came off a Supra with less than 30,000 miles and is in almost perfect shape.

How does the Supra Sidemount Intercooler hold up with a Big 16g turbo?

How does it Compare performance wise?
-Stock VS Supra Sidemount VS Big FMIC

Is there a chart or anything to look at?
-Like: for 16g you need this, for 20g you need this... this is good for up to this horsepower... this amount of boost?

Is the FMIC overkill for my application, or will I get more power than I would with a Supra?

Thanx,

Check out the VFAQ, I believe it says stock sidemount is 190ci, and supra is 496ci if I remember right.

They work well together...if you want to get alot of info on this, may I suggest going to dsmtalk and search for 16gGSX

He was one of the first people to do this and i believe he is running highs 12s in his 95 GSX with the supra SMIC

There is anothe guy on here, gstspeedracer running the supra SMIC with the 16g and he is making 300 some HP.

So I would recommend it if your on a budget for a Intecooler

Picked up a Supra side mount for $100, #@%#@%#@%#@%#@% to install, I also have a big 16g, works very well.

What does cfm count for?

Theoretically Speaking:
-AT 18PSI: If one intercooler cools efficently at 18psi, will you get the same performance as another that cools efficently at 22psi? (At 18PSI)

I have it on my car. It wasn't that hard for me to install, went by the VFAQ. I have a small 16g and I don't heat soak at all. My best time so far is 12.8@103mph 20psi if that's any indication. With my stocker IC and the 16g I would get 3 runs and then it would heatsoak. I've done 11 consecutive runs while logging and It didn't heat soak. For the money it's well worth it.

Its nice, it doesnt heat soak, its good for the 16G, and its a #@%#@%#@%#@%#@% to install.

On a 1g i would avoid it at all costs. If you want to get a MBC, exhaust, and an intercooler and try and be fast for cheap then go for it, otherwise get a frontmount. Ask around for those who have installed it on a 1G. it sucks. Doesnt fit well at all. almost lost it on my fist pull. as in almost fell out and ran it over.

I did run 109mph traps with it though, so i cant complain about the performance.

Not worth it IMO...Save up and get a Front Mount..On the street there are some gains, but I think in the long run you're better off saving and getting a front mount. I think a lot of people who have them installed are bench racers who claim to have felt more power when installing minscule items such as spark plugs and whatnot...but most have actually never made it to the track and have no proof of any actual gains other than their "butt-dyno" or whatever they want to call it...

I have a time slip to back up my claims. A few other guys here in Florida find it as a big advantage. :thumb:
