Stuck seal on transmission

I am trying to change a seal that is leaking, it the one to the driver's side halfshaft on a 2g awd automatic. I cannot see it, due to location, and I tried to pull the old seal out but the metal wall of the seal stayed in...pressed inside the trans.

So I'm looking for bright ideas before I start taking a lot of stuff apart to get the tranny out. Anyone got any tricks? Pulling the seal with pliers always worked for me before, but the rubber part just pulled off on this one

Do you have a seal puller? or you can always pull the tranny for better access.

You hope that you can pull the seals without taking the trans out, but sometimes you just have too.

Ah so there is a special tool for this? Dropping the trans is so much fun.

Yes there is a special tool for this. I got mine at harbor freight. They call it a seal puller. Kinda looks like a big lever hook thing ..

I went to Home Depot and got a small blue crow bar, 6 or 8 inches. Fit the 90 degree in behind the metal part and pryed gently all around and POP it fell out. Getting the new one in was probally just as much a headache. The crow bar cost under $4.

Ended up getting a 2x2 and hitting one end with a hammer to press the seal in.

Saw that seal puller and its a bit big maybe to big to fit in that small area. The crow bar i mentioned it very awesome.

Yeah but it looks like the seal puller goes at straight into the hole, where a crowbar requires space around the hole to pry. As for installing a seal, the best way I have found is to buy a small section of exhaust pipe that is the same outer diameter as the seal, then push the seal in with that and a rubber mallet.

I use the old seal and a small hammer to tap in the new seal..

Hopefully you did not scratch the inside edges of the trans or else it will leak. Metal does not seal well against scratched surfaces. Another way to get the seal in is to use a large socket and mallet.
