I pulled into school today and backed my car up into a parking spot and went to take it out of gear and the shifter itself will move up towards 5th where it should be out of gear but its still in reverse. So its currently parked I was wondering if it could be linkage and is there any trick that I could use just to get it home atleast? Thanks in advance.

Forgot to say I just got the car back running two days ago. Kid I bought it from was a failure at trying to put stuff back together so Im thinking he screwed the linkage up when he put it back together. Ive been going pretty easy on it the last couple days and doing a lot of engine breaking to seat the rings. Just a little more info for you guys

Sounds like a linkage issue. Usually when you loose the one that control the shifter side to side, you end up with 3rd and 4th. Possible somethings holding it in the 5th/R gate though.

Get someone to go move the shift and see if the linkages are on and moving

Any Idea how I can do that at school? Haha I'm kind of out of luck with the whole getting underneath it thing. Any other way to check the linkage or do I need to get it up in the air to do it?

shift linkages are on the top of the trans under the intercooler pipe (atleast on 1g they are). you should be able to pull them and such and put the car into the gears, obviously have the car turned off. Depending on if you can fix the linkages, and how far you are from your house i would put the car in 2nd or 3rd and not shift.

Don't have to get under neath it. The cables attach to the tranny under like where the thermostat housing is. Have someone shift the car. Look to see if the two arm have cables attached, and are moving.Usually a sheetmetal u clip pops out. See if its laying there.

Correct me if I'm wrong. I think its on top of the transmission, on top, underneath the intake pipe next to the battery.

Okay ill try and check that out after school if I can. Might have to call into work unfortunately. How hard is it going to be to get it fixed while in the school parking lot?

Thanks for al the info guys you were a huge help. Ill run check that out and see what's up after school. Atleast I got it into a parking spot!

Depends. Hopefully the cable is out of the bracket, or popped off the arm. Both 20 second fixes. Ductape will get you to work/home. If its one of those.

If its inside the car, same two things. If it connected everywhere, see if the cables broke inside (pull the eyelets, it'll come out to far) aside from that, maybe trans is scrwed up.

I bet a cable came out of its bracket on the trans, and thbe uclip is just chillin on top of the tranny.

There's also pilot holes for a cotter pin through each of the studs on the linkage. After you get your linkage back on, a bent paper clip will hold it together until you get either a real cotter pin or a new e-clip.

Okay ill take some tape out and a few paperclips so I can make it a mile down the road and get a cotter pin from autozone hopefully I can figure it out. Thanks for all the help guys u may have saved me on this one. Ill post again later and see what happens with it.

How would I go about getting to the linkage that isnt under the hood? Do i need to pull the center console or something?

Thanks for all the help guys found out it just ended up being the linkage popped off and had to get it back on and the cotter pin back in. Thanks again.
