Struts or strut bar?

Okay, yesterday when I was driving my car home (keep in mind I just bought it), everything I went over a bridge on the highway, the back of the car would sound like it was about to fall apart. It only does this in the back and I don't know what the problem could be. Any help?

Well, to start it is hard to tell without looking under the car at the "under body" and "suspension", to see all what it needs! You do live in Tenn., so it could be falling apart from rust and decay.

Blown struts maybe but take a look at them maybe some loose bolts

It's probably just everything in your spare tire well bouncing around. It may not need anything.

look at your struts and strut towers, your struts probably have never been replaced before. If you push down on the rear of the car or drive over a speed bump you should notice the rear end bouncing due to the struts being gone. Also look at where they bolt in (the towers) and check for rust and holes. Could u describe the sound a little more? Oh yeah and like black widow said, take a look at your spare tire well and make sure everything is secure back there. Do 2G N/Ts have a rear swaybar? If so, that's the most likely.

Something else you might want to look into... a friend of mine had the same type of problem. Just got the car and he would go over a bump and sounded horrible...

turned out the last owner had cut the springs and when weight was taken off the car.. either by a jack... or a pot hole... the spring would become loose and allow the spring and axle and such to just flop around on the already worn out struts

That's bad to do to cut the springs. Why couldn't they just get lowering springs. That's why probably the struts failed to. Now you might have to buy both for all 4 corners. Sorry to hear that!!!
