Hey all, my 1g is wearing its front drivers side tire really wierd. Took the tire off, did a visual and didnt see anything out of the ordinary. Im leaning more towards the strut mount, but dont know how to test it. Theres a little clunking coming from my drivers side, nothin too crazy tho. Also if it is the strut mount can I get away with just putting the mount in for the winter? Will the strut assembly take a teardown for the mount replacement or am i kinda stuck doin front struts????? Thanks for the help guys.

Have you tried shaking the wheel around when the car is up in the air. It seems like an alignment issue more than anything. Seems like it would be more like a ball joint or worn tie-rod causing the issue. You may want to try this. You want to certain of where the "clunk" or play is coming from so the problem can be fixed. Once you diagnose whats worn, I would recommend getting your front end aligned at a shop to prevent further wear.

Jacked the front up and wiggled the tire at 12 and 6 no movement, as well as at 3 and 9 nothing again. WTFAnd I do hear a clunk in the front end sometimes under a hard corner or cornering and hitting a bump. Never had an allignment done anywhere, how much does somethin like that cost??? Does it help at all that the car doesnt pull and the steering wheel is straight? :laser:

Inspect the suspension more carefully. Jack up the car and get under it to see if you can find play in your tie rods or any of the balljoints this time, rather than just the clock test. Just want to be really sure you're not dealing with a safety issue before you decide what to do. New strut mounts are always nice on 20 year old cars.

Either way, yes, you need an alignment.

s your tire like that all the way around it? Or just that one spot? And I would do as everyone suggested and take a real good look again. From when the clunking is happening it sounds like you have a bad strut. Is the car pretty bouncy on the front corner, like can you push down easily and have it spring back up? I would replace the strut at least to get rid of the clunking and then get an alignment. And usually you can get a front alignment for around $35 or so.

Wow. That looks like toe-out + camber, but that wouldn't cause problems on only one side in the front.

Put the car back down (if it isn't already; tee hee) and bounce it. Do you get the clunk? If you have too much toe-out in the front and one shock is sticking, then you might end up with that wear.
