after i turn off the car theres a ticking noise i think it might be the hot metal from the exaust but what do you think?

hm, i learned about something like this in class like a few years ago..a biology teacher was explaining the ticking noise coming from the block from the expansion of metal due to heat..but i don't know about exhaust. i'm probably wrong LOL.

More then likely it is just from the car cooling off after a drive, happens on just about every / any car especially newer cars or newer exhaust from my experiences. Should be more of a pinging / clanking though instead of a tick.

As the others said it's just the car cooling down after driving. It's nothing to worry about unless it's doing it while you're driving.

My car does the same thing. I've never had another car do that. And this is my third dsm...

I was thinking maybe my downpipe is a different material than the rest of the exhaust?

Another possible solution would be the ecu. I see in your profile this should be a '95 n/t. My mothers '95 does this after you shut the car down. Open your hood right after you shut down, and listen to the ECU ( on the drivers fender ). You should hear it buzzing like crazy. If this isn't happening, Im gonna have to go with everyone else, cool down of metal.

That's why we have fields of study such as biology for people like that to immerse themselves in. If you ever have noise from a block, it's from a dead engine. 250°F isn't enough to get iron to tick.

Ever pop the hood of a running DSM? Even without a turbo, you'll find the exhaust manifold glowing.

Your noise is most likely from the heat shroud around the cataclysmic diverter. Ignore it.
