What is the fastest anyone's gone on the stock intercooler? What is usually the max Whp you can pull out of it? Just curious cause I can't afford to upgrade it this time around and want to get an idea of what I can acheive without one. Is the 1st gens larger or better? Thanks guys!

I know Tevenor went 12.7 on the stock sidemount with his L1R.

I beleive 12.0 is the fastest. With enough octane you don't need cold air....but on pump gas its crap.

Ya if your reaching for a high HP goal, then you need tp upgrade the IC.

300=I wouldn't doubt it at all, just not a good idea if your goin for anything over that

It's just better to have it upgraded anyway, keep things nice and cool:thumb:

This is an excellent question. Do you think there would be any slight advantage in having the dejontool modified stock SMIC?

I am running an 18G with almost all supporting mods but on the dejontool modified stocker. Can I still attain 300WHP with that?

Would an intercooler sprayer help?

With the proper supporting mods you could get 300 easy, the dejon IC uses bigger in and outs, creating better flow.

Yes the IC sprayer would help.

RRE says:

"The vent hose that runs from the valve cover to the turbo inlet hose puts a lot of oily blow by into the intake tract and intercooler and piping. When oil builds up inside the intercooler, it drastically reduces the intercooler efficiency. "

When you take your intercooler off to clean out all the oil tar inside, go ahead and trim your inner fender to replace the louvers with screen, then you can at least get the maximum performance out of the stock unit.

so far phil beers has ran a 12.04 on stock ic along with many other stock things. ;)

thats the fastest i know of.

The orignal poster has a 2G. Phil Beers has a 1G, the 1G IC is a bit larger than the 2g. Also the 1G IC has internal turbulators which improves it's efficiency, and from what I hear the 2G IC doesn't.

Why is that mitsubishi took everthing decent in the 1st gen and made it less efficient for the 2nd gen? Were they trying to make it suck, or was this another one of those emisions things like tuning down the big blocks in the early '70s?

"Tuning down"? Nah, the 2G actually made more power than the 1G, 210 vs. 195.

They did it by "enhancing" the motor for the power increase ie. lighter rotating assembly (crankwalk, weak rods), tuned intake port size ( smaller), less restrictive IC ( no internal turbulators). While the 1G relied more on the turbo/ IC for it's power. I know the 1G has more potential for making power with upgrades, but the 2G is a better motor when stock, which is what Mitsu was concerned with.

the fastest SMIC 2G car went 11.70's on it.

I don't want to go 12.0 on mine but if I can I will.

Build your car for the goal you set out to attain.
Thats my .02

You wanna run 12.8's on race gas and 13.2-5 on pump, forget the IC put your money into having your turbo ported and opening up all the other restrictions and controlling fuel to make the kinda power you need.

If your gonna run your car on Friday nights at your local test and tune....get a old fire exstinguisher and fill it full of C02 for in between runs you can dows your IC.

I can't see spending $800-1200 bux for 30hp, but I can see how other people with 400+hp goals can.

You can go 12's on 300 whp with a awd. Probably around 375 whp on a FWD, don't quote me...there's alot of variables.

Well i guess mitsu didn't downtune the 2g, i guess i'm just pissed off that the 2g's engines were built more for dependablity than performance.

But back on topic, i ran 12.74-14b at 19spi 110octane on stock IC and pipes. Hope the supra smic will allow me to hit 11's with a bigger turbo.

hrmph question wasnt gen specific.

nothings stopping him from selling his 2g smic for 50 and buying a 1g smic for 50.
