I thought I remembered where guys were installing two stock intake cams and gaining power from it. IIRC, they couldn't install the intake cam in the exhaust position straight up, and it actually had to be degreed quite far. Don't quote me on any of this, but I believe it was an old school trick before aftermarket cams were cheap and plentyful.

You are not mistaken. From what I hear though, it is a huge pain to set timing because you can't use the factory marks.
